I have a 1997 Chevy Malibu. The HVAC fan stopped working on speeds 1 & 2.
Speeds 3 and up still work. I've been told I need a new control module.
Anyone seen this problem? Does this sound right? Also, I've heard sometimes
these modules can be reset to correct problems. Anyway to reset the control
module before replacing it to see if this will fix it? Any help appreciated.
Thanks,
Bob

Sounds like the resistor under the Glove box has gone bad. This is a common
problem and many people in the newsgroup have repaired this. I think the
cost for the Resistor was like $25.00. If you have a problem with the AC
going On/off and the light flickering on and off then you most likely have a
bad control panel, also a very common problem.

Common problem with an easy fix. Your blower motor resister is burnt (ignore
"control module" rubbish!). A new one costs about $20 and takes 20 minutes
to change in your driveway. Detailed instructions are posted everywhere,
search around.
Good luck.

Thanks to everyone for the input. Yep, I replaced mine today, went smooth.
Found a good set of instructions on the web (see link below). I got the
part, a blower resistor, for $15. Forget the control module stuff!

Bob,
As others have said, a $28 part will fix your fan's speed control. I just
changed mine and the new resistor looked like it had been redesigned (let's
hope for the better!!). My A/C panel was also acting weird, so I completely
disassembled it, cleaned the contacts and now it works like new. If you're
comfortable tinkering with these kinds of things I would recommend that you
try cleaning yours first - I understand that the part is not cheap to
replace.

I have had this problem in Dec 2000 and it's doing it again. I went looking
through my paper work and found the following:
compalint: Report interior fan not working all speeds
cause: No low speeds. Test feeds at resistor OK. Open in resistor
circuits
correction: Requires blower resistor.
This was covered and should still be covered by my warranty and I'm lead to
believe by reading the paper work that the cost would have been $115.
As far as resetting a module I've not heard of this before, but have heard
of replacing the resistor.
Hope this helps.
