'99 Malibu: Intake Manifold Problem????

In October I added some radioter fluid when the light came on my dash. Did not
think much about it (and perhaps I should have). I added some. Now it is on
again - leading me to believe there is a slow weak and what I have read on the
Edmunds discussion board about the dreaded intake manifold problem. I took the
following step below to figure out what is going on.

From where the resevior runs for adding fluid I followed a hose it (standing in
front of the engine - under the hood) from left to right and to the right of
the oil dipstick (but lower) and to left of the battery (arout 11 o'clock
direction-wise from the battery) I found a reddish substance that was slightly
puddled. This hose connects to radiator on the battery side of the car. My
knowledge of cars is limited - so this is the best way I can describe it. In
checking the oil I do not see any mix of radiator fluid and the oil seems fine.
How does this sound? Intake manifold problem.

Saying it is - and this seems to be a specific problem with Malibu's - do you
think I am OK taking it to the local garage (I have some co-workers who have
given me recommendations for a local garage - my car has never been to a
non-Chevy dealership save my tires)? It sounds like a pressure check on the
radiator would be my next step.

Thoughts/comments - I am all ears.

Ok for starters a pressure test will not prove you have a manifold
leak...But however will infact help push out the coolant where it is
leaking...You have to have the car hot for this to work and
running...Malibu's are known for intake gaskets going bad usually they
leak in the rear,,,,But you might get luck and if it is leaking its in
the front where you can see it....
Also it leaks standing in front of the car looking at the engine see the
hose there is a coolant sensor if it puddles up in there its the
intake..
As far as replacement its not that hard if youve done it before and if
you know what gaskets it needs they need to change all of the upper
gaskets as well...How many miles are on the car? Do you have any
warrenty GMPP i know covers this....There are a lot of problems that can
come up if its not done right....Goto someone you can trust who will
garrentee their work..

Take it to the local garage - avoid the dealership like the plague -
they will overcharge you for parts and labour.

He e-mailed me an up date He priced garages and found a dealership the
do the work for 500.00....Don't know about you but sounds good to me
..Considering the dealer will have a better warranty and guarantee on
parts....If a garage does it they will not warranty aftermarket parts at
least no garage i ever worked at...Also most of them only give a 60 day
guarantee...Where the dealer will warranty all parts and labor .....not
just a 60 or 90 day warrantee...And hope they did it right and the parts
dont go out...Anyone who has ever done one before dont know if you have
or not, knows exactly what is involved....Maybe you can trust just
anyone who will give you a better price...I think any cheaper than
that...Te guys just needing work and dont care what it is.....And more
than likey dont or has never done it before or he has a hourly mechanic
working for him which barely just graduated school....too many people
just look at the price insted of looking at what all your getting....

Also dealer in Canada  ive heard will squeeze every but they can get out
of you...so i see your point....I dont know who it is up there but
dealership prices for labor differs from shop to shop..And as far as the
parts go they are set by gm ....Not the dealers and most intakes i do is
after a year after the customer had a aftermarket intake put in and it
didnt hold up..

I paid $633 (CND) to have my intake manifold replaced at a local garage.  If
you want to be an optimist, a couple side benefits to having this work done
is that it is easy to replace the serpentine belt during the repair;
ordinarily I think this would cost a fair amount of time and dollars.  Mine
needed replacing, so it worked out well.  Also, you will end up with your
oil changed.

I have heard there are hidden waranties with regards to this repair.  I
quizzed the dealership about it when I had a 125,000 km on the car.  They
weren't willing to deal (said they might if it was 100,000 km).  I suspect
if I was dealing with a dealership that I had done business with before, I
might have been able to twist there arm into helping me with some of the
costs.
