Frozen hood release cable

We are enjoying (?) a cold snap here in the Maritimes and my 2000 Malibu has
met the challenges of the extreme weather conditions quite well... with one
annoying exception - the hood release cable has frozen solid!

I went to add some much-needed windshield wash at the gas station and found
that I had no way of opening the hood. The release lever in side the car
would not budge. I wasn't about to force it so I brought the car home - wash
tank unfilled and oil unchecked - and put it in my garage. After 20 minutes
or so with the heat on, the cable loosened up and I was able to pop the
hood. I examined as much of the cable as I could see (damn cramped in
there!) and I lubricated it as best I could at both ends (I tried to get it
into the cable tube as much as possible). It seemed to work OK after that,
but just this evening, after driving for about an hour, I thought I'd check
it again and sure enough, frozen solid!

Any thoughts? Advice? Similar experiences? Solutions?

I don't park the cars in the garage and I only heat it when I'm working out
there anyway, so keeping it inside would not be an answer.

Sounds to me pal you done answered your own question......Probly had ice
built up on it.....If it dont freeze up when its warm then your cable
more than likely isnt binding...May not even been your cable but your
latch itself...Sounds more like it the latch would freeze before the
cable would build ice.... Try lubing up your latch really good also....

A rear hand brake cable was frozen on my Maxima. I  tried  lubricating both
ends. Did not work. I noticed on the wheel end the small rubber boot was
torn. Water was probably entering from that end and working it s way inside
the jacket, where it would freeze and catch on the  cable. I finally decided
to change that cable for a new one. That solved the problem.

Good luck!
