Does anyone know how to override the "auto door lock on start" function
on a 98 Malibu?
Bought the car a short time ago and it is just a matter of time before I
lock myself out in a parking lot somewhere.
Dumb, I know but it will happen.
I tried pulling out the door lock relay on the driver's side fuse box
but that also disables the all door lock control at the front seats.
Any help or info. is appreciated,
Bruce

There are two ways for our door to automaticly lock you turn your
ignition on or you put it into gear.....Ive never seen one lock ust
because you shut the door on GM cars unless you have a aftermarket alarm
that does it...But anyways in your owners manual you have a section for
driver personlization ...If there is an override it may be in there or
call the dealer to see if they can get it to work  reprogramming the
BCM...I honestly believe you dont have to worrie ...
Does your car just lock when you shut the door?

Sorry for not supplying enough details, the doors lock when you turn the
ignition on, not by simply shutting the door. I would have no problem with
it if it locked when putting the car into gear. In truth what happens is
that when you turn the key to the "on" position the doors lock after about 2
seconds as if there is a timer in the circuit.
I will look and see if there is a personalization section in the owner's
manual.
Thanks for the ideas,
Bruce

Strange, my 2000 only locks when step on the brake. It also won't lock the
doors with the key in and the door open - presumably to prevent a lock-out.
Though I've never had reason to (I like the set-up), there must be a way to
customize these settings to a particular taste... or even turn them off.

Maybe the door lock feature was changed by the 2000 model. On my 98 the
doors will definitely lock with the door open and the key in the on
position, car running or not. Park brake set or not and it doesn't matter if
I step on the brake either.
Could be peculiar to my car only, don't know for sure. I looked in the
owners manual for a way to personalize the car as suggested by Steve C but
no luck.
  Thanks for the feedback.

My 2000 model (USA Version) only locks with the button or key in the
door.  Does not lock with ignition or brake.

Usually if there is a personlized feature your manual will have it in
there....Some lock when you turn your ignition on some lock when you put
it into gear...Just depends but as far as i know GM does not have a car
or truck that locks by just shutting the door...Unlike some Fords.....So
if you dont have a aftermarket alarm installed in your car then you
should be alright...
