Hi all, I am having poor fuel economy since my last intake manifold repair. i used to get about
370km's to a tank and now just over 200 km's a tank. took it into the dealer and they found it was
burning to rich from the trouble code. ( P0172) Service invoice says Fuel pressure was at 40 psi and
regulator was checked for leak. fuel trim at -20 ,evap was checked and found ok , changed maf
sensor and fuel was found in the oil. o2 sensor was changed which brought the trim to -18.
Just a note...all regular maintenance, tire pressure and all other obvious upkeep has been done to
this car and it has 72,000km's.
Faulty (silicone Fouled ) o2 sensor was the cause of the rich reading is what dealer states the
cause was...so i took the car home and ran a few tanks of fuel through it with little improvement.
Took it back to the dealer , same trouble code for system burning to rich...they installed a new maf
sensor with no positive effect...dicsonnected evap line...no change to trim numbers...fuel pressure
gauge was hooked up to test pressure and leakdown....pressure was a little low ...injector balance
test was done, found all 6 injectors to drop the same amount from 35psi to 0 psi....checked back
pressure...was found to be good..replaced all 6 injectors and upper intake gasket...fuel trim at -9
and was at -22.
took the car home but didn't make it far as the smell of fuel was to over powering...pulled over and
called the shop....service writer say they its just a build up of fuel in the manifold from the
service and would burn off shortly...ok...continued on my was for a little drive to burn off some
fuel...still smelled bad....parked it in the garage and was going to deal with it in the morning.
next morning there was a strong smell of fuel in the garage, so i took it back to the dealer..they
found faulty O-ring's on the injectors and repaired.
Sorry for the long read but trying to supply as much info as i can for this repair as the mileage
has improved to 285kms a tank but still am about 100kms off from before and the dealer says that
there is nothing else they can do as they have checked everything.
Anybody have any ideas where i can steer these folks to repair my vehicle as they don't seem to be
able to fix or answer why the large drop in mileage. any help will be
appreciated.....thanks............J
all the above info was pulled off the work invoices for my car.

OK not too sure what the conversion is from
km's to miles are but....From just reading your invoice information....I
noticed that after they replaced you injectors you had no new fuel
pressure reading....I understand that they did a leak down test and all
injectors dropped so they replaced them...But did they retest the fuel
pressure to check the fuel pressure regulator?
They replaced your upper intake gasket because they had to remove the
upper intake to get to your fuel rail to get out the injectors...Also
what was the air fuel ratio? sometimes the hard plastic vacuum lines
will get a kink in them restricting air which will cause it to run
rich...Also you IAC valve could have carbon build up restricting it to
open all the way..
And sometimes you will not get a code I had this before and it drove me
nuts untill I found out what it was......Also your timming could be off
a few degrees causing this condition but not enough to make it miss or
backfire....This is just a few more things to consider hope i was of
some help,,,,

1. "IAC valve could have carbon build up restricting it to
open all the way." It is a very common problem.
2. "Also your timming could be off a few degrees causing this condition but not enough to make it miss or backfire." It is possible that fuel injection duration and ignition timing are affected by temperature. For example, PCM will control ignition timing a little advance or retarded or EGR valve to maintain proper operation temperature and exhaust temperature.
3. "sometimes the hard plastic vacuum lines will get a kink in them restricting air which will cause it to run rich." I don't think so. It is just my opinion.
