I had the dealer make me a spare key for my new 2004 Malibu. He took a
blank off his rack, put it in a grinder and made a copy, just like a
hardware store would do. But the blank key had a "chip" that had to "learn"
my car's code.
It cost me $60 which I think is excessive. Did I get ripped off by the
dealer? Is there a cheaper way to get a spare key?

No, that's about what it costs. The car won't run without that chip. Next time
you buy a car, have the dealer throw in a extra key or two as part of the
deal...they'll do it for free that way.

When I went to a hardware store they gave me the story about the "chip" and
that the dealer had to make the spare for about $60. My dealer said that
was baloney and made me a spare for $5.

Malibu does not have the "chip in the key" the passlock sensor is in the
ignition cylinder and cylinder case itself. The key is just a normal key.
The chip in key is another theft deterrant system entirely.
