When slowly accelerating around 2000 RPM and between 45 - 60 mph the engine
will surge and back off repeatedly until I give it more gas or let off on
the gas. Funny thing is that it didn't start happening until I had to have
the intake manifold gasket replaced due to leaking coolant. Dealer told me
there is nothing they can do. They see the surges but until a new program
comes out for the computer from Chevrolet I will have to live with it.
They say there is no corrolation between the work they did and the new
problem. Any Ideas?????

I experienced some strange shifting characteristics in my '01 Maliboo
recently and thought the worst.  It consistently would slip at one speed,
then shift late at a higher rpm.  It occurred several times in exactly the
same manner as I accelerated away from the light to 45 mph.  I then noticed
that the shift lever was not fully in Drive, but instead between Drive and
Neutral.  Everything returned to normal when I properly positioned the lever
into Drive.

I was surprised how consistent the mis-shifts were and how differently it
operated with the shifter slightly out of drive.  Maybe yours shift lever is
just not adjusted properly.  See if putting it between 2 and D (or D and N)
changes your problem.

My 98 is doing the same thing. My friend is a transmission specialist, he
says a port that feeds the torque coverter gets clogged. I changed the
fluid, and it helped for about a month. He told me you have to pull the
side cover off and clean the port.My torque converter goes in and out of
lock up betwwen 45 and 60. Also when it does it, my cruise control
disengages, and won't reset untill it goes back in lock up.

I am interesting in wanting to know more about what bowtiecrazzy said about
his friend told him. My transmission acts up some. And my code said it was
the stuck torque converter. My car doesnt really go into second gear.

Did pulling the side cover and cleaning the port help?

My 2000 LS has been doing the SAME EXACT THING!!  and it is driving me
crazy because it will not do it all the time.  No one has found a problem
with it yet (because it will never do it when it is at the mechanics).
The only other thing it is doing is sometimes when I do not come to a
COMPLETE stop when shifting from reverse to drive the car will not engage
into drive properly.  Oh and I had the trans fluid changed just to make
sure that it is at the proper levels.  If any one has any ideas about this
PLEASE let us know because I am sure it is something simple where as CHEVY
just wants to replace the whole tranny for about $4000 because they cant
figure it out.
Thanks

So I decided to look at the injectors on the Malibu.  I got some Lucas (I
am not promoting) injector cleaner. I have used other injector cleaners
before but this stuff is awesome.  I think this surging is strictly dirty
injectors.  I have put about 600 miles on since I used the cleaner and the
car has not done it once!  Not to mention that it is running a lot
smoother.  Check out the Lucas injector cleaner vs cleaners like STP.  It
is a totally different product.  The Lucas product is a thick fluid
compared to the other products which I think are mostly diesel fuel.  If
my car starts acting up again I will be back on here updating this.
Thanks to all for helping out.

Thanks for emailing me back.

I love people who can only post questions but can never help out.

I had the same thing happen to me starting at about 55k miles.  Besides the
surge I had problems with my transmission slipping in and out of gear, or
not going into gear correctly.  The problem persists and then the car
started to delay shifting.  Finally on the second trip to the transmission
shop they found that there was a major problem with the transmission.  I
ended up sinking almost $2k into having the transmission rebuilt.  I was
hoping it was something simple like replacing the fluid and/or filter, but
no luck.  Besides replacing normal wear and tear parts, the transmission
shop found that one of the solenoids went bad and so did the torque
converter.  The shop was as astounded as I was, because they said this
should never happen on a car this soon.  They suspect a faulty part or a
problem in manufacturing.  I am planning on writing GM and complaining of
faulty manufacturing.  Please feel free to contact me if you want any
additional details on what was done to my car and/or if you are interested
in contact GM also.  It sounds like there is seriously something wrong with
the transmission in these cars.
