Thanks for the info. They want around $400.00 to replace these but I'm
wondering if its worth it. They claim it won't harm anything if I don't have
it done but the noise is annoying.

I wouldn't get it done unless there's a saftey issue. Save your money for
the other things that might break, like water pump, wheel bearings, rotors,
control arms, A/C...
But the engine has been good (4 cyl anyway).

hehe, I've already had the water pump done, ac control panel, and rotors
replaced twice plus numerous other things. The basic 4 cylinder engine has
been good though even though I've only got 66K miles on it. Other than this
popping noise and some creaking noises, the cars in good shape! I agree with
you though that it seems like a waste of money since it really doesn't do
anything except reduce the irritating noise.

I sprayed silicone down into the hole at the top of the strut mount inside
the engine compartment. I sprayed liberally until the space filled up
slightly with silicone (it eventually spread down inside). This eliminated
the squeak/popping noise on mine. It irritated the hell out of me before.
Now there is no noise at all.
