With less than 100 miles on the car I noticed a constant pitch groaning
noise from the driver's side front between 1000 and 2500 rpm under slight
load. It is now heard under acceleration and deceleration. Dealer's
technician says it is normal, but service manager said "something is
wrong" after hearing it before the tech looked. Tech says it is planetary
gear noise. I can feel vibration in the steering wheel when it is the
loadest. I do not hear it in Impalas or Ventures with 3.4L & auto 4's but
have heard it to varying degrees in 2 other Malibus at this one dealer.

Any thoughts?

Never ever buy 1st year model runs of a car (from any manufacturer).  They
always (yes always) have the most documented problems as the manufacturer works
the kinks out of the design.
