I have a "something loose" sensation in the front end of my 2000 Impala.
Only feel it when I drive slow, and over slight bumps.  I've removed the
front wheels and can feel axial end play (in and out) in both drive
shafts.  Is this normal?  Everything else in the front end seems tight.

Top Post!!!!!For starters you dont have drive shafts on a fron wheel
drive they are called CV Joints. Also some playt is normal..The noise you
are hearing is your top strut mounts....Unless you have rubber that is
cracked and comming out there is no safty issue just the annoyance of
the noise....The only way to fix the problem is to replace them. Not
something you can do yourself  because you have to compress the
spring....

Actually, they are called "half-shafts", but the term "drive shaft" is still
better than calling them CV joints. The CV joint is only a part on the
shaft.

Yes that is true Half shafts...Ok But pal I would like to see you try to
goto a parts store where I live and ask for Drive shafts on a front
wheel drive... I guess it all has to do with where you live ...Here they
are CV Shafts/Joints ...Once a while we get a Yankee that callls them
halfshafts....Hey I guess we are all right to an extent....But the noise
is comming from the top strut mounts im sure of that ....
Have a Good Day
