The transmission on my 2001 Malibu surges only between second and third
gear.  It eventually engages.  First to second and third to fourth are no
problem. If you put the shifter in second and shift manually through third
you can bypass the surge.  Anybody? Throttle body? Tranny fluid (sealed
system and no leaks under car)  I only have 55k miles on the car.  (Have
an appointment at the dealer but can't get in for two weeks)  Help!

Turned out it was the cruise control brake switch on mine - it would make
intermittent contact which fools the torque converter clutch into thinking
you've hit the brake pedal, so it takes it out of lockup, then immediately
tries to put it back into lockup.

Try putting your foot UNDER the brake pedal and pull upwards during the time
you notice the surge; if it's not too far out of adjustment (they also
fail), this should solve the problem.

Dear Carl,

Thanks. I'll give it a try and let you know what happened.

I had the exact same problem,
I Changed my fuel filter and it had no effect on the surging. I then
changed the spark plugs and the surging is completly gone and the car is
running great.
Try it out

Good Luck.

Hello.  Should have gotten back to you sooner.  How did you get the spark
plug boots off?
Thanks

I had to cut off mine and replace the wires. NO way they where coming off
with 75k miles on them. Use plenty of silicone or dielectric grease on the
new ones.

Im not positive but I think the Malibu has a sealed transmission.

There is a level plug in the side of the trans. .
It's checked with the engine running and trans slightly warm. Car must be
level while jacked up.

I was told by the GM dealer that the engine/Trans should be slightly warmed
up, engine OFF , and the car level before checking the oil level in the
Transmission.

This is a really dumb set up. The transmission gasket is reusable for those
of you who plan to change transmission filter and fluid.

Not according to Alldata.
"Engine must be running when fluid level screw is removed or excessive fluid
loss will occur"
Plus various warnings about not turning engine off as you may be burnt by
hot fluid being expelled, etc.
Just goes to show what the "service expert" says and what's in print says.
