Problems With Fuel Filter

I was trying to change my fuel filter on my 98 Malibu and encountered some
problems. I did not know that a tool was required to release the "quick
release", so I played with it for hours trying to figure it out, while
doing this, I broke off the four tabs on it. When I finally got fed up
trying to figure it out, I went to the local parts store and was told
about this tool. I purchased the tool to only find out that it will not
work without the four tabs on the quick release. Does anyone know how I
can get this thing disconnected.....? I'm out of ideas.
Thank you for any advice you can give

Take an open end wrench between the filter and connector and pry it apart,
it will break off what left of the lock tabs and the new filter comes with
a new lock.  Good Luck

The 2002 has a locking clip that pushes up and unlocks the female gas
tank feed. Very easy once you get used to it.
