I use slyvania Silverstar bulbs. They are a little expensive
50 $ for 2 but they are the best/legal that you can get.
Thank you,
Is there a noticeable difference between factory bulbs and Silverstar? I
assume they are easy to install. Does installation of new bulbs require
realignment of the lights?

It's a whiter, cleaner light.
I put a set in my GF's '02 Malibu low beams.
I usually use PIAA bulbs in my vehicles but I wanted to try a set of
Silverstars so her car was the test vehicle. I still like the PIAA's better
but the Silverstars are close and they are easily gotten over the counter
compared to the PIAA's.
No alignment needed, just pop out the headlight housing, repl. bulbs and pop
back in.
Clean the bulbs with alcohol before putting them in, I don't care if they
are new as I've had new ones fail due to oils on them from the factory.
Don't touch the glass after cleaning.

How much would a real HID conversion kit cost me for my 2004 Malibu Classic,
also how much would it cost to convert the rear lights to LEDs?

Which silverstars are the best to get? Cool Blues? Silverstar? or
Xtravision?

I would go with the Silverstar.
The Blues look neat but the more blue less white color seems be absorbed
more by dark objects like trees, etc. and to me there is less light being
reflected back than with the whiter Silverstar bulbs light.

Wrong...and bulb with a filter coating produces *less* light. Think about it
for 3-seconds.

It's not less light unless the coating is very heavy, it's the color
spectrum being produced.
The better quality bulbs have a very thin transparent coating compared the
blue bulbs that have a heavy coating.
I've tried/got them all.
Silverstars and PIAA bulbs use a very thin coating to balance the gas mix
they are using inside their bulbs to achieve the color spectrum they want.
Cheap bulbs use the heavy blue coating the get the "blueish" affect and they
do put out less light.
I used uncoated higher wattage bulbs for years before the coated xenon bulbs
came out and the new gen. xenon coated put out a cleaner light that reflects
back better than the high wattage bulbs IMO.
The new 55/60w xenon put reflective light down the road as far as the old
reg. halogen 80/100w do without the need for relays to protect vehicle
switching sys. .
In my bike I prefer a 3800k bulb over the 4100k that I use in my cars, truck
and snowmobiles. Seems on the bike a tad more yellow works better through my
eyes..........YMMV
