tonight I was driving my 99 Monte Carlo Z34 and hit the gas, but the car
didn't move very fast, I shut the radio off and listened to the engine
reving like it was in neutral, but it was still in gear.

I figured out that the car will not go into gear if I say in [D] drive, but
it will VERY slowly accelerate if I manually shift from 1st to 2nd. If I hit
the gas with the car in 1st, it will rev and rev, but will slowly
accelerate. It's like a standard with the clutch letting out VERY slow.

Anyone have any ideas????

It would be helpful to know whether it has 58,000 miles on it or
258,000 miles. It would also be cool to hear that you checked the fluid
level, if possible, and what color it was.
Slipping is death for a transmission. What you report is slipping.
Check and or fill the fluid level and go from their. I think you will
be going shopping.

sorry... I was trying to send my message out asap.

the car has 140k on it, the fluid was just changed back in Sept. and the
level was good. I've heard this transmission is gone and needs to be
rebuilt. The drive clutch or something liek that is gone and the only way to
get at it is to do an entire overhaul.

You've probably heard right. Automatic transmission are full of
clutches. They'll wear out eventually. 140k does not sound too low to
have it go. The crap is that in order to have your transmission
rebuilt, there's a lot of workmanship involved, kinda like open heart
surgery. to get to the transmission guts, you have to take everything
apart. Takes plenty of hours. Is expensive.

Yes, $1800 to have it rebuilt!!

I'm learning towards going that way because the prices on new cars is so
high. I know I need the transmission and brakes all around. Then I'm
assuming the radiator will go next. After that... hopefully I get one more
year out of the car.

Thanks
