When I turn on my rear defroster or heater fan I notice the lights on my car
dim momentarily only for a second, but the inside dash lights and headlights
all do it, also the car seems to start shaking a little bit more, possibly
due to the alternator kicking in?  Can I put in a more powerful alternator
or would a bigger battery help more to keep this from happening?

Depending upon how many amps output you have now, you could probably up
the amps by 10-15 or more. However, more output takes more power to
turn it and hence more shaking of the engine if it is not compensating
for the  power demand. A bigger alternator or battery is not the answer
to your problem.
Most of the sypmtoms you describe are normal. Too much shaking could
mean the engine is out of tune .
