Yes it will.
The newer cars now have a gas cap light or message instead of the check
engine light.
If all is well it will reset itself after aprox. 50 heat cycles.

Thanks, it went off, it took 2 days but i guess thats 50 heat cycles

It isnt heat cycles..Its ignition cycles...
Meaning everytime your PCM runs a diagnosis the you shut of the car the
PCM resets then when you start it back up and the PCM reruns the
diagnosis and so one...Has nothing to do with heat at all..Once it
completes usually 40-60 ignition cycles without failing the code the pcm
clears the light and stores the code in the history...

Yes, this exact thing happened to my '98 Malibu, I can't remember what the
code read,
my mechanic asked me if I had forgotten to screw on the gas cap, in fact my
daughter had.

There is a sensor mounted on top of the fuel pump assy., looks just
like a map sensor on the later model cars that reads pressure and
vacuum within the tank.
