I own a 2002 Malibu LS which was purchased new. Currently it runs
okay, but starting it is often tough and the electical system appears
to go in and out intermittently. I was driving it to work two
mornings ago, it was dark, so hit the high beams. As soon as I did
this, all of the display lights, radio, everything blanked for about
two seconds, and my clock reset to 12:00. After this, my Brake light
and ABS light were illuminated until I shut off my car. I have also
experienced the same "no start" problem every other malibu owner has
experienced to include the a/c problem with switch 1,2,3 and the
intermittent A/C on and off which calls for the $170 control panel.
Any suggestions on the electrical problem I am currently having. I
don’t feel like paying someone 55 an hour to do something I might be
able to do myself. Any tips are greatly appreciated.

I had the same problem with my AC switch for the 1, 2, and 3 settings.
It was a resistor switch that had to be replaced and now works fine.
The only problem they could not help me with was the AC going on and
off by itself. It would go from cold to warm and the AC "on" light
would blink on and off. I took it to the dealer and he could not
repeat the problem. Sure enough the next day it happened again.

There are many postings pointing to faulty or intermittent ignition switches
as the source of all sorts of electrical gremlins
