Have 97 Mailbu. After a heavy rain, notice and now Gas Gage and Temp Gage
do not read. I could not find any fuses affecting gage operations. Do I
have to replace the entire instrument cluster?

When the car is running, are the cooling fans running even though the
engine is cold? If so, your cluster has most likely failed.
The only way to know for sure is to have it checked out by a mechanic.
That instrument cluster failed on my 2001 Malibu, and even though it was
covered under warranty, they had to get approval from the regional
manger just to order a new cluster, due to the cost of the item (that's
what I was told).

Everything works normal, lights in dash, fans are fine, Tach, Odometer, MPH
gage all work fine. Just Temp and Gas Gage In op. To wierd!
Day before the rain, no problems and never had any leaks to shorten out.
Simply zero readings on Temp and Gas Gage next AM.
Found one for $17 on Ebay out of 1999 with close to the same mileage.
Figured can't hurt to change/try and now to figure out out to disassemble
dash face to change.
My 88 GMC Truck cluster had Oil Pressure gage that read pegged out when
engine turned off and mechanic told me cluster gage had to be repladed as
all on same circuit so at that time I learned all gages are on same type
circuit board (cluster). Got a used when for it then for $60 vs. new for
$200.
Just wondering if anyone else had cluster gages act this way as other than
that, everything else is fine. I checked all 3 fuse boxes and no fuses or
relays bad yet none relate to Cluster gages! Other ideas? Dash
disassemble ideas?

Got the replacement off Ebay for a reasonable price. Entire unit is self
contained so if one gage malfunctions, your stuck and have to replace the
whole cluster.
Looks like just 4 to 6 screws plus 1 quick release plug provides all power
and controls ALL gages and the whole assembly comes out. Have to becareful
pulling out dash mouldings first as there's a canon plug on dimmer light
switch.
