We've got our '97 Malibu going to see our mechanic next Monday. He said it
is most likely a wheel bearing given the age and miles of the car. We're
lucky to have a great mechanic that we've been using for almost 20 years.
He'll find the problem and also give a basic going over looking for anything
else that could be coming up with the car.

72,000 miles is just getting "broken in". But wheel bearings can fail at
that low mileage on occasion.

Actually one of the things I have seen cause a noise like this is tire
wear on the front tires. I have had several cars do this (including my
03 Malibu) and sometimes it would go away when I rotated the tires, and
sometimes I had to put up with it until I replaced the tires.

My 2000 Malibu roared like crazy. It was difficult to tell where
it was coming from. Also, the passenger side rear tire was wearing on
its inside, and I suspected misalignment.
However, I happened across a great deal on tires, and replaced them
all, and the roaring went away.

I HAVE AN 04 MALIBU AND IT MAKES A SOUND TOO. MY HUSBAND TOOK IT TO THE
MECHANIC AND IT WAS THE BRAKE CARLIBER LOOSE BUT CHEVROLET HAS BAD BRAKES
ANYWAY. MY BRAKE PAD ARE NEW AND STILL SQUEAK AND MAKE A ROARING AND A
HORRIBLE GRINDING SOUND.

If the pad was loose, that almost always means that whoever installed it
did so incorrectly. As for squeaking and grinding, that means someone
was done wrong most of the time. As for the roaring, in my experience
this is ALWAYS the tires. Everything Chevy I have owned in the last
several decades has had issues with how the front tires wear that cause
them to make a roaring/rumbline sound after a while. This always goes
aways when they are replaced.
