99 malibu 6 cylinder 3.1 100000 miles started to lope at idle . then later
started to do it while driving. check engine light works but does not
appear with this promblem. so i eliminated the possibilty of a sensor. i
also know that any regulating eguipment [like the idle control]would cause
an emmission promblem and  the check engine light would come on. any ideas.
thanks

Did you check for a vacuum leak?  That can cause a lope without setting
any codes.

i did look for vacuum leaks. i used a mechanics stethoscope to listen but
did not hear any . i also tryed letting propane seep around the engine and
did not get any type of rev up .

If it was just at idle I would suggest maybe a dirty throttle body, but
doing it above idle I'm not sure.
