Ok what is the deal with this engine? I hate to buy the first year of any
new engine, but I am in the market for new truck.
I have an 01 2.2L Sonoma SL, and its the one I plan to replace. Its a
really nice truck, but under powered for a work vehicle. I'ld sell it for a
very reasonable price if anybody is interested.
I also have an 02 4.3L S-10. Nice truck with plenty of power. I figured
another one of those woudl be just the ticket. I called my guy at the local
Chevy dealer and I was informed I can no longer get an S-10 and I can no
longer get a 4.3L in a smaller truck.
All they have is this Colorado thing with an inline 5. Now it may be a
great truck and a great motor, but I don't want to be the darned beta
tester. What is the upshot on this truck and motor so far?
I see the I-5 developes more horsepower and supposedly gets better gas
mileage, but reliability is an absolute must for me.
(I already have a full size truck also for those needs so that isn't really
a necessity.)
Oh, yeah... these are all work truck for my communications contracting
company. I'm not just a truck hog... LOL.

I bought a Canyon with the 5cyl, with the 5-speed it has nice power feels
like a 6. I had a V8 ford with less HP. The HP is BS. IMHO. However the
Canyon isn't broken in yet. Hope this helps. Tim

It's the same basic engine as the inline 6 that has been
in the Trailblazers for a few years now. The only big
difference is that it has one less cylinder and uses balance
shafts. So far, the inline 6 has been almost bulletproof, except
for a production run of them that would crack the steel sleeves
in the aluminum block.

Well, I guess I'll find out. I went ahead and bought one. It should be
ready for me to pick up this evening or first thing in the morning.

I drove it around a little today. Did some grocery shopping and took the
family out for lunch. Its pretty comfortable, and the cd/stereo sounds real
good. Other than that can't say much. It seems to have decent power, and
its prerigged for towing so I'll try my boat behind it when I get a chance.
Just seat of the pants it doesn't feel like it has any more power than my
4.3L S-10. I got the crew cab and there is plenty of room for the kids in
the back without having to scrunch the seats forward.
I don't like the license plate bracket in the front. Can't put a custom
license plate frame on it. Atleast not easily.

Ok, I had it on the highway, and noticed an unpleasant vibration. Either
something int he front end or the wheels are all out of balance. The dealer
will be seeing me tommorrow.

We took a quick look at the Colorado/Canyon crew cab 2wd. Nice looking truck
but with a tow rating of only 4000 lbs it was a bit shy for my 23' trailer -
probably too short of a wheelbase for this trailer.

I guess it takes all kinds... I thought that thing was the ugliest
thing I've seen since the Avalanche and Aztek.

You know why its called the Avalanche? Because when it starts to fall apart,
it falls apart in an Avalanche.

You answered your own question!!!!!!!!!
"I hate to buy the first year of any
> new engine"
Excellent advice and I agree whole heartedly. I would wait 3 years before
buying a new model, engine, etc. and check the Web message boards, federal
recall lists, technical service bulletins, etc. before buying. Why be the
guinea pig for the manufacturer????
