My truck has the optional rubber floor covering instead of carpet.

I have worked on a lot of vehciles that have this rubber matting and see it
ripped up and torn quite a bit.

What can be done to help prolong its life?

I have the rubber in my 92 and it hasn't ripped yet.  I have a good set of
floor mats and I try to keep it clean.
