Help
I just installed a 3 inch exhaust and was having fun with my
truck. I have the 3.73 rear end gears..I wanted to see if I had the
posi rear end so I powerbraked it for a few and think I blew the rear
end. Now if I go five feet I hear a nasty clunk....theres no way I can
drive it and when I was powerbraking I noticed only one wheel spinning
so I guess I dont have posi ( would I want it for any reason ?).....Im
wondering if this could be the axle or is it definitly gonna be the
rear end gears......Im going right now to get a tow truck and take it
apart......Is there anything I should be looking for....
Also being that this is a 1994 and I might need to swap this rear
end......Im wondering if I could get a rear out of a later model truck
that has Disc brakes and replace the drum brake system rear end that I
have now...At this point Im up sh.ts creek but I love my truck and Im
gonan have to fix it.........Any help will be greatly
appreciated....Please mail me or post here I really need the help

I have a 1985 10-bolt rear axle with drums, 3.73 gears 150K I'd torch out
for cheep. I'd want to say it would go in your rig. I'm in southern NH.
I'd guess it could be the diffy, I'd look into the U-joints though. I bet
there OEM and you toasted them. BUT - the 10 bolt in your truck isn't the
best axle to abuse.
'Round here we call 'em "brake stands".

You dumb sh.t! You could have just checked the glove box production sticker
for the RPO code G80 which would have told you if you had the posi or not.
Much cheaper than a rear end.

he isn't hard up for cash. (Then, I would agree that it was a "dumb" thing
to do)

If you trashed the rear end, you might as well replace it with a posi and
4:10 gears. it will give you more of the torque you are looking for and only
bump your rpm's up a little.

Shouldn't power brake, that burns the clutches in the transmission, don't be
surprised when you get your axle fixed if you feel a slights shutter through
the entire transmission when you accelerate, you have no idea how hot them
clutches get when you power brake.
