96 chevy truck oil filter housing

I have a 96 silverado I am going to replace the oil filter housing seal
in. My question is does the oil cooler lines that screw into the
housing have some sort of seal in them also? Is it just a regular o
ring?

The oil cooler lines have a specific seal/gasket that is used.
Depending on what your dealer has in stock,some seals are made together
as one, and others are 2 seperate, either will work. The housing itself
uses an O-ring to attach to the block and is the most common leak for
that area. A large torx bit is needed to remove the housing and I
suggest you replace that O-ring while you are in the area. Easy job.

Can I replace the housing without taking the lines off? I went to the
dealer today and they acted as If I was bothering them or something. I
got the gasket and large o ring for the housing, but not any seals for
the oil cooler lines. I have plenty of o rings at home and wondered if
they would work for the lines themselves that screw into the housing? I
have two bolts on my housing that look like regular socket heads.

This is a 96 4x4 and the front driveshaft seems to be in the way of
getting a wrench on those oil cooler line fittings although I have not
looked at it too much.

I was going to take the housing off Sunday but this is my daily driver
and I hhate to get the thing apart and not have the correct parts to
put this thing back together since everything will be closed. I thnk I
have the right housing gasket and large o ring seal, it is the lines I
guess I am worred about.

I really appreciate your help!

O Ring and you don't have to remove the lines to replace the seals and
gasket. Note the gasket sometimes has desolved and is not even there
but you definitly need a gasket in the center. IF the gasket is in
place sometime is very hard to clean out, I use a power drill with a
wire brush or gasket remover pad installed. Yes you can loosen the oil
cooler lines to move the unit around to the side, but you don't have to
completly remove the unit. If 4x4 drop driveline speeds up the process.
