I have a 03 Silverado and took it in for a noise in the trans I thought and
they had a couple of service bulletins. They replaced the rubber at the top
of the strut towers, and regreased the steering wheel shaft where it comes
together around the u-joint in the shaft. It did solve the noise in the
front end. Now the truck has 64k on it, and its making the same noise, but
louder. Everytime that I turn the wheel or hit bumps, it sounds like a bad
cv joint. I can feel it in the steering wheel. I took it back to the same
dealership and they won't do anything for it. They said that they are aware
of the steering shaft noise and said that gm won't do anything to it. Its
not a safety issue, and that it will just do it again if they do fix it.
They want to charge me a hours labor to lube the joint again. My fathers 03
2500hd does the same thing. Anyone have this problem? Any suggestions?

Yep

Take 15 minutes and grease the shaft.

most GM ISS (intermediate steering shaft) 'knock' because the lube gets
pushed out of the way internally. it isnt a safety issue so recall wont
happen. easiest fix is to remove pinch bolt at rack and give the ISS a
handjob. repeat pumping it all the way in and all the way out several times
and the lube will spread back out along shaft.......no reason to remove
shaft from vehicle!!........kinky, but works fine........on a simular
aside, ever since i got stuck with one of their piston slappin' 5.3's i
have felt they kinda had their way with me, sexually that is. and now i
have to give hundreds of thier vehicles a hand job!.......and i didnt even
get a kiss

There is supposed to be a redesigned shaft in the works. Possibly
Feb/March 2007..
Otherwise, do as previous poster had recommended and "stroke" the
steering shaft to circulate the grease..
