I have a 97 Olds Silhouette. The other day when backing out of the garage, I
put it in reverse and it didn't seem to engage, I then put it in neutral and
then drive and it wouldn't engage. I put it in park for a bit and back in
reverse, still would not engage, I gave it some gas and the it made a loud
clunck and engaged all at once. It has done this for the past few days now,
but only when cold, doesn't do it through the day after driving for a while.
Any ideas?

Morning sickeness, its pregnent. Ok it's not with child, but the symtom is
called
morning sickness.
There are two causes I have found.
One the filter is partially blocked andthe fluid old and nasty. fluid thins
out as it warms up andthen flows easier. Fluid change.
Second cause:
There is an internal leak in the tranny that is allowing the fluid to drain
out of the torque convertor over night and it takes a few for it to refill
when engine started. One way to check is check fluid level a few minutes
after you turn the engine off. It should register about an 1-2" over the
full mark. The check it first thing in the morning. If it is a lot higher on
the stick you found the problem

Awesome info! I decided to a fluid/filter change. There was some metal
chunks in the bottom of the pan and everything was covered with a black like
film. I am hoping the drain valve your talking about was just gummed up,
allowing the torque converter fluid to drain out overnight, since it would
only happen in the morning. That combined with a dirty filter and fluid,
maybe its fixed. Kinda concerned with the metal chunks though!?! I'll let
you know in the next couple of days if this improved it.

Metal chunks or flakes? There is a big difference. If chunks start planning
on replacing the box, or scrape the car.
