replace rear end

I just bought a 97 Chevy 3/4 6.5 diesel (2500) A mechanic going over
the thing for me has informed me the rear end is shot. He found
grindings in it and purchased a replacement from a dealer. This is my
first pickup truck and my first experience with anything like this
other than normal repair sort of stuff. The previous owner told me he
replaced the trans and the injection pump within the last 18 months. I
had the truck exactly two days when it made a loud thunking sound that
made the truck actually shudder when backing up or cornering.
Any ideas please. Is this gonna? be REAL expensive
Thank you

I've never pulled the cover off a diff with any kind of mileage that didn't
have some "metal flake" to the lube.  so the questions that jump to mind
are, How big were the "grindings"?  Was the diff making noise?  How many
miles on the odometer?  Was it a posi trac diff?  did it have the correct
fluid in it?  Was there excessive play in the axle bearings? Carrier
bearings? Pinion bearings?
What do you mean by "purchased a replacement from a dealer"?  does this mean
he went to your local GM Goodwrench house a purchased a brand new rear axle
assembly?  If so Ouch.

I just don?t know the answers to a lot of the questions in your
reply. I can only guess that it was a posi-traction since this truck
seems to have everything else  on it, too. Leather, etc.
All the mech said was he found grindings in the oil. Three weeks later
(he?s had it that long) he said it should be ready in a few days and
he?d call me. He said he?d just gotten the rear end in. He had to go
to a dealer. I can only assume he meant a new car dealer?s parts
department. These are things I just don? thave answers to. Now I?m
assuming the absolute worst. Particularly since a friend said those
things are easy to find in junk yards. Another place I know very
little about; junk yards; except that?s where vehicles go when they
aren?t vehicling any more. No kidding. I am that stupid about how cars
work. It makes perfect sense to me that if it?s got tits or tires it
ain?t nothin? but trouble. I assume that was written just for me.
But thanks for your reply. If anything else crosses your mind re: this
situation, please re-reply.

Yeah, one thing comes to mind real fast.  You want to see the old parts, and
you want to look under your rig and see if what's under it looks brand new,
and looks like what he says is the old one.  This guy is vague as hell as to
what he is finding, and what he is doing.  Never ever take the first price
on a major repair, always get a second opinion.  when in doubt bite the
bullet and get the second opinion from the manufacturer, even if it cost a
bit.  If it was the clutch pack that let loose, worse case scenario Eaton 33
spline set up $250 retail.for a clutch pack kit.  Add about 3-4  hours
labor.  Joe Blows Shade Tree garage is not going to do this kind of work,
they just replace assemblies.  And three weeks, I sure hope you wrote the
mileage down when you dropped it off.

You're saying it right, WL - I think his "mechanic" saw a guy that didn't
know a lot about cars and just might take some advantage of him.  OTOH, he
might just be a nice guy that knows he doesn't have to explain alot to a guy
that wouldn't understand the explanation anyway.  I hope its the latter -
there ain't many of them guys left out there!

well I suppose I could have been a little more specific. The guy
that?s working on my rig is the same guy that?s buying my old vehicle,
a 94 Chevy Tahoe 2 dr. 4x4 that he?s had his eye on for about a year.
We made a gentleman? s agreement that he?d go over my "new" truck
before he took possession of my "old" truck. So we exchanged
vehicles until he?s had the chance to fix all the stuff that was
needed on the "new" one. He said it is in pretty good shape except
fo this rear end thing. So. Yup, I?m a guy what know nuttin? about the
mechanical end of things. I?m pretty much a drive ?til something goes
wrong then take it and have it fixed guy. A sitting duck maybe but I
know my limitations when it comes to fixing things like vehicles. If
it?s wood or something to do with the house, that?s different. Like I
said, tits or tires. But I really appreciate all the response and the
prices you?ve mentioned aren?t nearly as bad as I?d thought. I?m
already panicking this into thousands of dollars for a $10K vehicle
with 170K on it. Anyway. I?m still hoping for the best and we should
be finding out within a few days. Again, thanks and if anyone has
anything else they?d like to add, please feel free.

If it is non locking rear end a new chunk ( the rear end internals
reassembled) purchased from a dealer then the cost could be around 219.00
dollars to 384.00 dollars according to how much the mechanic marks it up.
GM direct shows the price for 219.00 plus shipping.  I just changed the rear
end and transmission in my play toy.  I purchased it from locally in
Louisiana at a GM parts supply place in Houma, LA.  The part can be found at
http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/ also.

What do you think the price would be for a new positrac carrier assembly?

I?ve got a few more answers; more information. Rather than
speculating I did what I should have done 3 days ago. I called the
mechanic and ASKED him; ?how much is this costing me??. So far, about
$600. Parts for the pumpkin ( I thought this was a truck not a coach )
came from a dealer and bearings from somewhere else. The mech?s
explanation for all this is as follows: The dealer said this
combination was the second one he?d sold that week. The mech?s
approach was that there was a design flaw that caused a whole big
bunch of these things to go belly-up and if he were to buy one from
the junk yard he might be doing this whole job over again in 3 months.
He knows me well enough to know that I?m an awful jumpy, anxious guy
when it comes to my vehicles not running right. I?m of the opinion
that the mech is figuring to give me peace of mind; he?ll do the job
extra right, once and for all by putting new parts that DON?T have
this design flaw in them. He said the whole rear end was just loaded
with little metal parts and it appeared that the mechanism had been
running dry for quite a while. Maybe poor maintainence, maybe poor
design. No matter. It was shot. He?s got the old parts and even took
pictures of the old mechanism to show me. Should be ready this coming
week ( AHEM! about time! but can?t rush a good thing ) and all the
other stuff that was wrong with it will be fixed, too!
Pittman arm, horn, four ways, trailer light plug, brake controller.
fuel line sender something leaking, etc.
The only thing I?ll have left to do is have the driver?s side arm rest
fixed. Unfortunately, he?s not an upholstery man.
OK guys. Have at me. I just feel that a) I know my limitations, b)
fixing things like this is not among those limitations, c) this guy
seems trustworthy and talented and d) it weren?t no good to me the way
it was.
You are all allowed to have a shot at me for being a) gullible or b) a
wimp. Last, I?m going to be towing my horses around with this vehicle.
No I?m not rich because I have horses. Just the opposite.
EquusKeepusBrokus! But maybe having this thing fixed for a little too
much money will give me one less thing to worry about when I?m out on
the freeway with the nags. How much is serenity worth?
But thanks to everyone who offered advice/insight/observations.
Update when I get it back and actually drive it

Naah - I was seriously asking Sarge how much a complete, new, positrac
carrier SHOULD cost. (I can't seem to use the gmpartsdirect site 'cause
I don't know the part number.)
In my opinion, if your mechanic is rebuilding a poisitrac differential,
with new parts, for anywhere near $600, it's a hellova deal.

I think they run in the $600 to $700 range.  no GM but something like
a Eaton posi unit.
