Pointless bitching about ABS.

The ABS control module went out on my 99 Silverado 5.3.  The cheapest
any dealership in my area will replace it is $1100.  The brakes still
work fine, but no ABS, and now I have the annoyance of having the ABS
and Brake dashboard lights constantly lit.

This is the first problem I've had with this truck in 6 years, so I
don't have room to complain.  Just pointless bitching.  $1100 *#!!*

How about a used one from a salvage yard, may be a decent gamble?

Just hang in here for a little bit and someone will answer up with the name
of the company who fixes these modules for $150 or so.  It's only a relay or
something just as simple but GM does fix these things only replaces them.
Maybe I'll do a little bit of searching on the net as well because I'd like
to know the company as well.  I have seen their site a few years back but I
forgot to save it.

I had to change the module on my 99 Z71, cost me a freakin fortune, even at
cost

Anyone know if there is an "ABS Fixer" in Canada?

The site below is in the USofA

Now that the winter is over it's time to park my winter beater Jimmy and
it's time to leave the chevy group till next winter.

Since GM denies any problems with their ABS systems (dating way back),
here was my fix. Go to http://www.toyota.com/4runner/index.html. Toyota
replaced the engine on my 93 4runner free of charge when it was out of
warranty with 90,000 miles on it. This hasn't had any problems since and
just turned over 250k miles.

The only thing I'll miss in the Jimmy is the extra power of the 4.3. The
Toyotas are dogs (but more dependable) compared to the GMs.

John,
Chevy is having trouble with their ABS units. I'm a die hard GM guy but
they really should be stepping up to the plate on this one. I bought 2
- 01 Chevy 1500 Z71s in 2001. Right around the warrenty period end
(36K) both lost their ABS. Problem is when they go out on the 01, you
LOSE YOUR BRAKES! I was pulling into the post office went to hit the
brakes on dry pavement at a very low rate of speed and the anti locks
kicked in. I couldn't stop the truck and went right over the curb and
nearly into the building. Scary!! This one happened under warrenty and
they replaced them.

My second truck lost them while pulling up to a traffic light behind
another car. Again, low rate of speed on dry pavement. Again the anti
lock brakes kicked in and the truck wouldn't stop. I had to turn to
avoid hitting the car. I was lucky to not get into an accident. These
failed just after the warrenty (36,674 miles). The dealer wouldn't do
anything about them. Repair $550.

I thought my first truck was a fluke but have since talked to several
other people with this year truck. Many have had similar problems. I
have asked the deal repeatedly about this and if there was a recall
issued. No.

Chevy (GM) is going to get hit with a BIG law suit on this one.
Engineering 101, if the ABS breaks it shouldn't cause you to lose your
ability to stop. I'm considering contacting the NTSB on this one before
someone gets hurt or killed.

Anyone else out there experience this problem?

This is a rather common problem, others have complained about it over
on
http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/
It has happened at least 3x in 4yrs in my 01 Tahoe - first time the
truck was just 1yr old, the last time I rear-ended an Avalanche on its
trailer hitch which did no damage to it but punched in my bumper ...
all low-speed attempts to stop.  I have heard there are some abs
components that can get dirty or corrode which can cause the problem,
but that does not really explain why it happened on a 1yr new, rarely
driven vehicle.

Yes, I just had the 4 MPH ABS NO brake Problem on my 2000 1500
Silverado 4x4..
Almost hit a car in the Gas Station, next day hit a curb.. No
Brakes.

Problem is dirty or bad Speed sensors on BOTH front brake Hubs..

Have Cleaned your front Brake Speed Sensors located behind the front
Brake Rotors.   Then do the Brake Voltage Test performed by
Dealers.

Brake Sensor Part No.   15112379  $62 or $112 Each IF replacement
needed.

Should you have lower mileage Chevy,  Dealer may fix $0 under Good
Will policy.

It may feel like you are losing your brakes, but in fact, that's not
what is happening.  The ABS is working fine and doing what it's
supposed to do, but it gets incorrect information from the front
wheel speed sensors.  Due to corrosion or just a bad sensor, you
can get a loss of signal at low speeds.  The ABS simply interprets
this as a wheel "locking up".....so it attempts to release the brake
on whichever side it sees "lockup".  Which can be very irritating
and dangerous.  I'm surprised that GM hasn't changed the software
to raise the ABS engagement point above about 10 klms per hour,
and then monitor the signals below that point and figure out a way
to pinpoint failing front wheel speed sensors and set a code for it.
This way, you would always have brakes at low speeds and have
a way to detect the failing sensors.

By the way, the fix is really easy....you just have to remove the
front rotors, unscrew the bolt that holds the sensors into the
front hub....remove the sensor and clean off the mounting surface
until you are down to bare metal.  Clean the sensor, apply some
silicone lube around the body and seal of the sensor and re-install.
Road test it and see if this helps.
