This is a bit confusing... What's the axle assembly shaped like??
Look here: http://coloradok5.com/axleguide.shtml
Then go down and you'll find pictures of both "14 bolt" axle housings.
Which did you buy? I don't know if the 9.5" was available with an
8-lug hub. If so, then what you're describing would *probably* work.
I wasn't aware of what all your original, smaller 14 bolt came in, but
I was under the impression that most 3/4 ton trucks used the bigger of
the two, almost always with 8-lug hubs.

The two covers are identical and are the same as the small 14 bolt
picture except for the 3/4 ton axle has a rubber plug in the bottom and
my 1/2 ton does not. Don't know why? Shock and spring mounts are in
the same place along with where the breather enters.

There is no 6 bolt axle that will fit in a 14 bolt full floater. Also
they made a lot of xales with 8 bolt hubs on the 14 bolt 9.5, they
were mostly in 1 ton vans though. I few made it into some P/U's

I've seen a "big" 14 bolt with 6-lug axles, but it had custom made
shafts. Definitely not what you'd call "off the shelf".
