Driver information Center issues

In my driver information center read out I should be able to get a instant
fuel mileage reading, however all I can get is average fuel mileage. Any
ideas why this would not read this function. 2004 Chevy Avalanche

Do you have the buttons on the steering wheel?  If not then you just get the
basic DIC, in 2004 they dropped some features unless you get some of the
higher option packages.

All the buttons to operate it are on the steering wheel and this seems to be
the only option that is not available

Truck is loaded with every option that it came with in 04 except for the Z71
package
