After several days of testing and many starts, everything seems to be fine
now. No fuel smell and predictable starts, just like new. It was a faulty
fuel pressure regulator and a cracked vacuum hose attached to the regulator.
About $60 in parts and a few minutes to replace it. Thanks to those who
responded.
