Hello, I have been noticing lately what sounds like a loose lifter. My gas
mileage is terrible. I was going to try to tighten it tomorrow, is there
anything I should know before I try it ? It's a 89 Daytona ES, turbo, 2.5
l, standard. I have never done this before, is it a big job ? I have a
torque wrench and a haynes manual. Thanks for any suggestions.

There's quite a bit you should know before you try it. Most of what you
should know before you try it is contained in the Factory Service Manual.
Most of what you should know before you try it is NOT contained in Haynes,
Chiltons or other aftermarket books.
Note that this engine uses hydraulic roller lifters.

Haynes manuals are terrific for worsening problems and increasing repair
bills.

Thanks Daniel, OK I took your advice and I phoned around, I can get a
rebuilt head for the car at a reasonable price. What about replacing the
whole head ? Is that a job I could tackle ? or is it a better solution ?

Errr...I don't remember suggesting a replacement head.
The best thing at this point is to do some proper diagnosis and find out
*for sure* what's causing the noise and/or poor fuel economy BEFORE
deciding which parts to replace.

there are no adjustments, you may have just a bad lifter or a rocker arm
that is falling apart, It could even be a cam lobe worn down causing it,
either way the valve cover will have to be removed for inspection
