What exactly is the difference between a "blog" and usenet?

Yes, but then it got reinvented by Google after Al Gore invented the
internet.

And Blog is so much more cool sounding than "Usenet", which sounds like and
was a product of an engineering team and so the "sexy" name factor is a
minus something.

Most people it seems now access Usenet through Google and haven't a clue
about it's age or alternative access methods.
