Thy yes - go ahead and put water into your gas tank, drive around for a
couple of days, and report back to us on the results.

You *can* separate the water into hydrogen and oxygen, and run on
hydrogen, but it costs more in energy to do the separation than you get out.

I think that WW2 fighter planes had water injection in the carburator.
I'm not sure what the reason was.  Naturally the engines didn't run on
water - the water was used as an additive.

Water injection slows down the combustion and lowers its temperature,
avoiding knocking.

Maybe good for high altitude (lowering octane requirements).
