Rainwater is finding its way into the ventilation fan situated in the
passenger footwell.
Is this a known issue?
I am guessing that rainwater is being sucked from the rainwater drainage
channel below the windscreen motors. I have cleaned the channel and the
drainage holes seem clear.
I also think that the water collects in the air ducts supplying the heat
exchanger. When I corner sharply the water flows along the airduct and hits
the fan blades and makes a 'swishing' noise.
Are there any modifications I can make to stop this happening.

are you sure the heat exchanger isn't fubar ? happens when the antifreeze
either hasn't been changed regularly or the wrong antifreeze has been used,
setting up some sort of electrolysis which corrodes the innards of the heat
exchanger*
you must always use the red OEM stuff, apparently.

claims and refusal to guarantee my coolant exchange / heat exchenger
when I supplied my own cheapo antifreeze.)

Don't know about the XM, but on the Xantia this can happen when the
plastic moulding along the bottom of the windscreen (which hides the
wiper motor and linkage) comes unstuck.
On the Xantia, the bottom edge of the windscreen is directly over the
heater air intake. If the moulding comes away from the glass, water can
run down behind it and drip into the air intake, eventually appearing in
the passenger foot well.
Might be worth checking.....
