C5 Indicators

Hello,

I have a 52 plate C5.
It's a 1.8 LX Petrol.

I have had it for 2 years now, and have had very few problems with it,
until now !

The problem I have is that the Left indicator only works
intermittently.
There seems to be no pattern to it, just that sometimes it comes on and

other times it doesn't.

I've had it in to the garage, but they can find nothing wrong with it.
(although I believe they simply checked the bulb / connector etc)

If I put the hazards on, it works everytime, so I know the bulb etc is
fine.
Also the Right indicator is always fine, so I doubt it is something
major on the electrical side of things.

I have no clue about cars really, but I can only assume it's something
at the indicator end of the car (i.e. inside the steering unit) as
opposed to where the bulbs are.

Can anyone shed any light on what might me causing this, and whether it

is an easy fix please ?

Thank you.

Maybe I am. I've had 2 BXs and 2 Xantias and they've been the most
reliable cars I've ever had (That's torn it - Ed). Current Xant (SX TD)
has done 122K miles and has only been off the road once, when the
dreaded clutch cable clip broke. On a Sunday afternoon. The day before a
bank-holiday Monday......

Apologies to the OP for thread hijack :o)

nightmare ! my xantia has just passed 95k, I bought it at 77k and the
clutch was done at 60 ish so I'm hoping that the cable clip was done.
haven't checked - "(That's torn it - Ed)" yup ... :D

saw a Xantia taxi in my local citroen specialists with 300k on it.

Had mine from new, clip went at 78k. Still on original clutch and cable....

The original clips are black, replacements are white (and much stronger).

One trick if you have to replace the clip is remove the 'spring'
canister from the back of the *brake* pedal. It can be a tight fit, but
will pull out (It's the bit that pushes on the brake doseur valve). With
it removed, the brake pedal drops to the floor and usually gives enough
clearance to get the clutch pedal pivot bolt out without resorting to
the hacksaw :o)

TDs last a long time if you don't let the radiator silt up and overheat.....

I'll bear that in mind, thanks. saved for future reference.

correct grade antifreeze has been used and sometime this year it
will be flushed. the temp rerely goes above 80 even on the hottest
day of last year, stuck in traffic for an hour. yesterday it was hovering
just above 60 so cooling efficiency seems pretty good.

next job is to flush and replace the LHM and return filters, etc.

I just changed the clutch cable clip on my Xantia, was it just my bad luck
or did they put the nut and bolt, in the clutch pedal pivot the wrong way
round on all Xantias?

The bolt had to come out of the pivot towards the brake pedal which was
conveniently in the way, floor it or pull it right up. One hack saw and a
strong man to pull on the brake pedal and all was well again:-)

As far as I know, they're all put in the wrong way. One thing you need
to remember is when they built the Xantia, they started with the heater
matrix, then the pedal assembly and added the rest later :o) Dashboard
out job to replace the heater, say 8-10 hours!

See my reply to '.' for my method. Doesn't always work, maybe the
carpet/underlay is thicker on some models......

Heh.. Glad it just wasn't me that had to suffer....Bolt is in the right way
round now though, so it shouldn't be a problem in the future, even if the
new improved black clip does give way again....

The C5 uses different stalks to the older Citroens and they are multiplexed.
I guess you need a new stalk. Not cheap though.

I'd be tempted to strip and bodge / mod / diy with a soldering iron.

This is a common problem on the earlier C5 - it's due to a faulty 'com2000'
unit - this is the main 'multplex' unit that sits behind the steering wheel
and controls all the stalks functions.

I've had exaclty the same problem on my 02 plate C5 SX estate, not cheap to
replace ~250GBP IRC, but only takes around 20 minutes so can be done while
you wait.

Another common problem around that area is sticking 'padles' on the cruise
control stalk, this is ~25GBP for the parts, if you have cruise control I
would be inclined to replace this at the same time.

I kept my old 'com2000' and found that with a little fiddling about you can
open it up and gain complete access to the insides, the actual switch part
for the indicators is just a small metal rectangle with a couple of contacts
on, I have not tried this yet but I think that bending the contacts slightly
should cure the problem.

Knowing what I do now with regard to the 'comm2000' unit, I might have been
inclined to try and find an auto electrician that would be willing to take
the unit apart and try and fix it, rather that paying 250 + labour.

Hope this helps.

Regards
