A/C refrigerant

Would anyone know what type of A/C refrigerant is used in a 1988 Citroen
CXA? There is no info in the owner's manual or the repair manual--just says
see your local CXA dealer. Well CXA are dead as Dodos hereabouts. There is
also mounted where the horns normally would be found an odd looking device
with all kinds of German tin plaques attached to it and I cannot figure out
what it is supposed to do. There is the remnant of some kind of cable
hanging off of it.

Thank you for any help.

Pop into an aircon place and ask them, any will know.

If it uses R12 (the old type) then the R134A pipes will not fit the
charging connectors, as they have different ends.

My '93 Peugeot had R12, so there is no doubt that your '88 Citroen will also
be R12
Equally, you won't be able to get R12 now, but there used to be a conversion
kit available to bring it up to date, also using some special oil developed
in Australia. A good independent air con specialist will know. It was all
explained to me when I got a local man out to mine, but as there was also a
leak, it worked out cheaper to change the car.
Gene S. Park - 23 May 2006 19:36 GMT
I spoke with  a mechanic yesterday who works on foreign cars, i.e. Alfa
Romeos etc. and he said that he could recharge the AC for $125 and if the
car used R12 then it would be easier and that he preferred to use R12.
Apparently there is available here in the US the older R12. He said that
with R12 there would be no need to completely evacuate the system and just
add the R12, however if it was the R13, then it would mean a complete
evacuation of the system.

Regards,

Gene

I might have guessed that the anti pollution (R12 is an ozone pollutant)
rules would not apply to the USA.
Ben Boyle - 27 May 2006 15:51 GMT
Before you get your panties into a bunch, R12 has not been sold here since
1995. However, that doesn't mean that there isn't still some old cans of it
running about. Most vehicles that used R12 that still have working A/C have
been converted to R134A

You are right, hardly any rules apply to the USA anymore, what with the
Grand Bushwa and Gunslinger Cheney along with their Big Business Gangsters
have turned the White House into a Shithouse. They want to keep the 12
million slave labor wetbacks so the don't have to pay real wages to real
workers. Hell, if the crooks who hire the wetbacks were to pay an honest
wage, then Americans could do the work that SOB says we won't do.
Sorry for the diatribe but things are in a really sorry mess in this country
what with all of the crooked politicians, some of which are so stupid they
have been caught red handed.

Thanks to everyone for your comments, but the question of the refrigerant is
really moot now. The AC compressor is kaput and so far I have not been able
to find a replacement or the $1200 that it would to buy it.
As for the gadget in the wheel well, it did turn out to be the cruise
control. I have contacted VDO Siemens and they were not able to help to find
a replacement cable that connects from it to the carb. Oh, well at least the
car runs like a charm.

With serious air con faults it is often cheaper to buy another vehicle.
The cable that connects the cruise control to the carb looked in the oicture
to be a fairly standard bowden cable.
If so, then I would have thought it would be easy enough to get one made up.
Try your local motorcycle shop.

FWIW, the "Geschwindigkeits-Regelgerat" translates as "speed regulator".
But how would that tally with it being an electrical component?  Was it an
electrically operated speed limiter for the fuel system perhaps?  Pity the
rest of the label is obscured by the flash.

I was reading <news:de5ck3-h03.ln1@ID-107770.user.individual.net>,
made by the entity known as Whiskers, that requests spam to be sent to

Gentlemen:

Here is what is on the plaque of the thingymajig.:
VDO adolf schnidling AG
6000 Frankurt (spelling?) 90
Geschwindigheids regelgerät
VDO typ: Tennostat 83.601
Typzeichen KBA ABC 95.004
Nennsanung 12 volt.

May I assume that this some kind of cruise control?

There is  also mounted where the horns normally would be found an odd
looking device with all kinds of German tin plaques attached to it and I
cannot figure out what it is supposed to do. There is  the remnant of some
kind of cable hanging off of it.

Thank you  all for your responses. They all have been helpful
