it's that time again, repair the few faults on an otherwise
good car or declare it a POS, bin it and buy another one ?

1/ anyone know who does the cheapest flushing oil ?

2/ I'm getting quoted £100+ vat for a power steering pump pipe.

it's a one piece job with about 2' of rubber hose in the middle,
presumably to aid fitting. it goes between the hydraulic pump
and the power steering pump. lots of complex bends. are they
/really/ £100+ vat and how long would one expect a seriously
experienced mechanic to swap one out ?

3/ are pliades the cheapest for recon spheres and *how*
wallowy are comfort spheres ? broken damper wallowy or
just comfy ?

This is your Xant, right?

GSF do it for £14.50 for 5 litres - how much time do you want to spend
trying to find it cheaper?

> 2/ I'm getting quoted £100+ vat for a power steering pump pipe.

Take your car to somebody with clue. It doesn't even _have_ a power
steering pump.

The hydraulic pump provides the power for the steering.

Any half decent Citroen specialist will have rolls of cupro-nickel pipe in
both diameters, flaring tools and unions to suit.

> 3/ are pliades the cheapest for recon spheres

Don't waste your money on recon spheres. Just buy new ones.

> and *how* wallowy are comfort spheres ?

They're great for XMs and VSX Xants with hydractive that's stuck in
permanent hard - or for people who are trying to mask other hydraulic
problems.

depends. it might be my BMW 530d touring soon......

0. what's the capacity ? HBOL is charecteristically vague

he has a clue, forgive me, I've misdescribed the part:

there's 3/4 outlets from the hydraulic pump. one of those pipes
turns into a rubber hose, crosses the front of the car under the
rad then turns back into a metal pipe just under the front valance,
near side. it's leaking at that point.

obviously, my bad. power steering actuator ?

he is a cit specialist. he has all the tools. he's been at it for a
long time and he's never had cause to do this particular job.
when citroen faxed through the line drawings (to select the
correct part number) we both agreed that /that/ was the right
part. quote £95 +vat

if you have information to counter that I'm all ears. I'm happy
to give you the guys phone number and let you quizz him.

GSF again, right ? so all that regassing at the cit meet, is that
a waste of money or a cash cow ?

ok, ta for that.

You're right. A POS.

alt.autos.bmw is that way ->

4 litres or so.

Later Xant with 6+2 pump, I presume? Could well be - the power steering
doesn't go through the main regulator block, like on older hydraulic
cars. I'm fairly sure they're all-metal on my s2 XM, though.

Sounds about right for a Cit parts price... <wince>

Could take it to somewhere like Pirtek - if it's a leak where the flex
joins the metal, they may be able to do something.

New spheres are £20 each.
Only lot I know of that still do regassing (Westroen in Manchester)
charge £125 for five regassed spheres fitted. Haven't noticed anybody
doing any at an event for years (but I might have missed someone)

thanks. will supply my own flushing oil and expect a small discount
for the cit bloke not using any of his LHM

that's what he said. what do you think about it being a 2 hour job ?

the entire metal union is corroded beyond repair. it's location is
why I thought it would be a common fault with an inexpensive
fix, what with all the water, salt and grit the part is exposed to.

ok, ok. I'll buy new from GSF

will bear that in mind.

<FX/tannoy>last chance for sphere regassing before the parade
</FX>

p.s

if all 5 spheres are replaced (accum ok) and flushing oil is in for
1000 miles and the LHM is replaced but float isn't evident, what's
the next likely fault ? there's a lot of life left in the car but there is
also a limit to how much I'm willing to spend to prove that, iyswim.

Dunno. Might be, might not be. Not stuck my head up one and had a look.

At Wood Green? Didn't see/hear that.

rear arm bearing will be done.

If you were there, and I was there, it seems more "stalkery" NOT to look me
out and say hello...

But then 'Dotties' secrete would be out, I understand that it's
difficult to disguise a penis shapped object...

Is it possible to replace the part with a length of suitably bent copper
tubing as used in central heating and a jubilee clip? I did this
successfully on a metal fuel pipe on a Pug 205D.

"end user"  v.  A command regrettably not implemented in most systems.

I wouldn't like to do that on the 'pressure' side of a hydraulic
circuit, and certainly not on a system that is safety critical...!
