Citroen C5 Issues

Hello all,

I have a Citroen C5 HDI Exclusive Auto 2003 Variant DC4HX Version
DC4HXE and have two problems with it. (Will post each seperately)

The first concerns the fuel consumption and the MPG indicator.

The car has only done 27K and had mainly been kept for local mileage.
Now its doing circa 80 miles per day.

It seems the fuel consumption is suspiciouly high. We get through a
tank of diesel in 4-5 days (400). Dont know hoiw much the tank holds
but this seems excessive?

The MPG indicator from the computer indicate 32.5 MPG - regardless of
the speed I do! I have driven several miles at 30, 50, 60 and 70 miles
per hour and the MPG sits at 32.5

Any idea on either of these two related )perhaps) issues?

400 miles on a full tank doesn't sound unreasonable, unless the tank is a
lot bigger than I expect.  The C5 is not a small car!

If the fuel-consumption indicator is meant to show the varying rate for
every minute or mile then it sounds as though yours isn't working
correctly.  I've never touched a C5 so I can't be certain of how it should
work.

32mpg does sound low, though it depends which engine it is.
<quick google>
Right, DC4HXE is 2.2HDi, which is considerably thirstier than the 2.0 or
1.6HDis - mix that with an autobox, and if it's only ever been pootled
locally it's quite possible that the particulate filter's blocked and/or
burning off - which requires more fuel. Any sign of an engine management
light or "Pollution Fault" warning?

Normally (and, again, not C5-specific) there's two modes - instant and
average-since-last-reset

It's entirely possible that it's in average-since-last-reset mode and
it's not been reset for bloody ever - so the average won't exactly change
rapidly. You wouldn't expect a couple of miles to change an average
established over 27,000 miles...

As for the "Don't know how big the tank is"... SURELY it's not beyond the
wit of mankind to actually read the flamin' pump...?

... in fact you'd probably hope very heartily that it wouldn't!

Hmmm ... if it's flaming I don't think trying to read the numbers would be
high on my list of priorities  ;))  And with current prices, those numbers
are just scary anyway.

32mpg sounds horribly low to me, my Mercedes w203 220 CDI (same size
turbo-diesel and an auto box) returns 38 around town (9 mile trip each way)
and 44+ on journeys. So the C5 at probably a lower weight, should be at
least equalling these figures.

Richard (who's wife has a C2, hence the reason I monitor this NG).

Is there another word for synonym?

Thanks everybody - gives me something to think about.

As for reading the pump: £ per litre - MPG, Litre per gallon - head
explodes. Only other option; read manual/instructions; am bloke; does
not compute. fizz

Clue: 4.5 litres in a gallon.

I always worked on 4.54; I used to have a little window sticker in one
of my cars in the early 90s from Shell with a conversion chart on it.

I work out my MPG in my head when filling up. It's not that I'm smart,
it's that I'm stubborn and I've been trying to get the hang of it for 16
years ;D

set the computer to mpg & hold in the button on the stalk for 3seconds this
will reset the computer
my c5 2.2 averages between 37 & 45mpg, particulate filter should not need
replacing until about 56k depending on type of usage
