Sorry you lost your car!
It was a nice looking Citroen, and worth more than you were paid, I'm sure.
Condolences,

That's a reflection in a broken mirror. And yes, by your standards,
I'm old.
Some better pictures of me.

The one I sold it to was not happy. Turns out he had scrapped an XM a
week before. Engine was wrecked but it would have been a good body
donor to repair my old one.
Guess ne's trying to get that scrapped one back.

Since I had all the papers he can still fix it and resell it. Guess
I'm driving something similar.

If I have got 'em, they're in a bin bag in a lockup, because I don't want
'em any more - mine now wears a set of "Wobbly-web" alloys.

I've never liked the s1 trims that much - I did have a set, put them on my
s2, stood back - and promptly took 'em off again. The s2 trims aren't
great, but they seem to "fit" the look better to my eyes.

I had a set of s2 Exclusive alloys for a while :-
http://www.iddstechnique.nl/front.jpg

but they don't have a centre hole, so they're bloody difficult to balance,
and they needed refurbishing anyway. They didn't quite look "right" with a
black car, either - they look great on lighter colours, though. Wierd,
innit?

So now my black s2 (with tan leather) bears a set of these :-
http://www.citroen.mb.ca/citroenet/xm/xm34.jpg

I've always liked the look of them - probably just as well the XM isn't
Emerald Green, else I'd be SOOOO tempted to paint the wheels yellow :-

They are of simple design. A plate with five little holes. I think
they look good.

Beyond economical repair. It's worth, say, Eur1500, but repairs would cost
<wet finger in air> twice that, with parts at manufacturer's list price.

Still seems like a waste.  In the U.S. you can purchase the vehicle from
the insurance company, usually at a big discount to what they paid you.
Either you do the restoration yourself, or have someone do it for you.
Some states require you to re-register it as a salvaged vehicle, but
many do not.  Isn't there such a system in the EU?  I'd expect there
wouldn't be in Germany, but what about other countries?

Absolutely. Here in the UK, the third party's insurance can not officially
write off the car without the owner's consent. If that'd been my car, I'd
probably have insisted on a payout less salvage value, with the car not
being written off.

But then, I've already got a spare LH front wing and both RH doors sat in a
lockup from an XM I broke last year. I've already sold the RH front wing,
but it shouldn't be difficult to source another.

Same here. Unless the police steals the papers. Then you need new
papers and the car needs to pass a check.

> If that'd

If I wanted to I could have had the car fixed, sure I could. Still had
the papers and drove with it for more then two months after the
accident.
Could have restored the car but that would cost me more than car
value. Next to that, that 2litre engine slurbs like an aminal no
matter how you set your foot.

Despite the looks all that was broken was the outside. Chassis,
engine, transmission and the lot was fine.

don't you have scrap-yards there?
if you can find a similar model in a scrap-yard, the parts would be well
cheap.
from looking at the damage I'd estimate 200 euros for parts and 100 for
labour to my mechanic mate with his welding torch.

Old cars get stripped. Usefull parts are stored and sold. Rubbish is

All subsidised jobs, that's why cars are expensive and that's why you
need to pay to get a car scrapped. Yes, we pay two times for scrapping
a car out here.

No, they're definitely quite warm.

I know what you mean.  It just isn't the same unless you can use the
acetylene torch to cut some metal.  Even if it's just a piece of scrap
that you sneak in so you can put on a show.  Then you can turn to your
girlfriend and say something like "I had to wear that strange helmet
because if I stare at the flame without one, it'll destroy my retinas
and I'll go blind."  The bravery drives women wild.  Gets you laid
eleven times out of every ten tries.

I only ever used the helmet for arc-welding, for gas cutting and welding I
just used dark goggles. Is there someone I can sue?

For what?  Not going blind or not getting laid?

My employer purchased a plasma cutter last month--last weekend, I cut a 10cm
dia. "sun" out of 1/4" steel in about 30 seconds.

It was easier than buttering bread.

If I can remember, I'll post photos.

Kewl, but does it make proper sparks or is it just an efficient cutting
tool?  A lot of these modern ways of doing industrial stuff have taken
away all of the smoke, sparks, and steam from the actual work.  People
can't tell how hard you're working any more because you're not giving
off sparks.  I blame the Japanese.

Yes, do that.  Especially the ones with sparks and smoke.

It blows (really fine) sparks half a metre.

I looked, and there they were.  Right where they said they'd be.  Needs
more sparks, though. Not enough colors.

That's a plethora of sparkasis!!  The type of metal is the limiting factor, I
think . . . maybe if we used Yerpeen steel . . . ?

That might do it.  I was also considering what kind of ground up metal
filings you might want to stuff inside that tube for a good sparkler
effect.  A little copper, a dash of molybdenum, some sodium, if you're a
real man, a bit of zinc, and maybe break out the oxygen bottle,
respirator, and protective suit and gloves ... then add a dash of
cadmium and beryllium.

Odd, I've never associated zinc with manhood . . . .

He has an argon tank on the welding rack . . . is that flammable?

Only one way to tell. Cut it in half with that plasma torch. Say, got
any propane tanks layin' about?

No, not only non-flammable, inert as well. Used as a shielding gas
instead of flux. Will still go *boom* just from being highly
compressed....

If your in the US, should be lots of them with the old style valves for
cheep. Costs as much for just the valve as a complete new tank.

Oh!  It makes for a clean weld, right?

Everything seems to have gone to Insto-Replaceo "Rhino"-esque tanks.

Hmm, using argon to purge a propane tank.

Hey Billy Bagwell (sorry, it reminds me of a Hobbit), how is it you are
familiar with metal working? I just always pictured you as a guy with a
pocket protecter and a lap-top under your arm.

Just don't breathe the vapo(u)rs or it will cut yours short ... and the
rest of the living cells in your body, too.  A little bit, taken as an
organic element in food is very good for you.  Breathing fumes
containing the stuff is very much otherwise.

That excludes the time needed to fix it.
I was told that if it were an insurance repair (insurance pays the
bill) it would cost well over Eur 4000.
The car was valued at Eur1500, that's 1350 cash and Eur150 for the
wreck.

Quite normal out here. It avoids skaters.
It was a parking lot near a cemetery.
