Is there anyone out there that has had problems with the plastic top
of the dashboard cracking in numerous places? I have a black truck
and gray interior, and the plastic top of the dashboard has many
cracks in it, mostly running front to back. The truck has never been
wrecked, 67k miles, and driven on city streets or freeways, no off
road.
My question is, how to replace the plastic insert. I would like to
change out this broken piece but I can't see any easy way to remove
it. Hopefully, it doesn't require the removal of the entire dash.
Thanks,
Jim

I also have a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 that I purchased about 2 weeks ago
used. We bought in Texas. The dash was in perfect condition; however
we drove it to New Mexico and within about 4 days I have 4 8inch
cracks along the top. Talk about a bummer. My neighbor has a 2000
Dodge Ram and his dash is cracked too. I don't know if the humidity
or dryness plays a big role in the dash's life. I have never seen so
many cracks in just a couple of days.

I also have a 99 Dodge Ram 1500. My dash is currently perfect. Anyone
got any recommendations to keep it that way? This thread has me
spooked!

Keep dust off of it and use a window shade whenever parked in the sun.

My 99 1500 gets parked in the sun every day, no tint, black interior and
paint. Needless to say it gets HOT.
The only location showing signs of sun damage is the button to open the
armrest. Everything else is fine. I give the plastic a wipedown with
ArmorAll or some similar product about once every 6 months when the dust
gets thick enough that I can't see what I wrote on it 3 months before that.

Still haven't sold it yet, huh? :)

Nah. It actually runs 'pretty good' these days. New transmission and
clutch helped drivability a lot (got another NV3500 out of a flood
damaged 3.9L Dak). Also just giving up and acknowledging the fact its
*supposed* to run like sh.t helped too ;)

Mine is in the Gulf coast of Texas so it might be the humidity

Has anybody had an experience replacing the cracked dashboard of Ram 1500
pickups. I have a 2000 model and apparently the severe Dallas heat caused
several cracks in the dashboard?
Any knowledge of cost of replacement, availability and difficulty?

I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Ext. Cab 4x4. Black with gray interior. Dash
cracked front to back in several locations.
Had to purchase the top dash cover from Dodge. Called several dealerships
and all but 1 said I couldn't just buy the top piece. They said I had to
buy the whole dash and it would cost over $800. Finally 1 dealership sold
me just the top panel. It cost $194.00. The dealer was Weinberg Dodge in
Grandview Mo. Phone number: 816.763.6800. I switched the top panels. It
was pretty easy to replace. I did have to remove the passenger air bag. Be
sure and disconnect battery for at least 30 minutes before removing air
bag. The part number is 5GK45RC8AB.

Did you by chance use Armor All on the dash that cracked?

What is the procedure for removing just the top piece?

> What is the procedure for removing just the top piece?
You mean the piece that's cracked? You can't - the entire instrument panel
is molded as a single piece. You'd have to remove the entire panel (a
fairly involved job - get a factory service manual before attempting) and
replace it.

I located the top piece that is cracked. Dealers will tell you the whole
dash has to be replaced at a cost of at least $800.00. But a dealer here
in Tampa, FL. will sell just the top piece which they say they've replaced
many. I just need to know how far I have to disassemble the dash to get the
top piece in.
By the way, the part is $194.00 and is part #5GK45RC8AB and comes in black
or grey.

Is that a DC part number?

You said all you had to do was remove the airbag. There must be more to it.
Can you explain please?

WillyWally,
I also have the top dash cover I have purchased. Can you give me some
advise on replacing this part??
