My friend who owns this truck says that it doesn't hold 98L total gas from
the pump because the tank has to allow %15 for vapour.
I mentioned something about my car being filled right up to the NECK and
over flowing and how I don't see a 15% difference because mine doesn't allow
for vapour. Pontiac states the tank size to be exactly what I have pumped
in from the pump. (give or take a litre)
It all came up because he said that he got 438km out of his truck on a full
tank with 38km left to go city driving.
Doing some research I found this......
2003 Dodge Ram 4x4 Quad 6ft box
13 mpg city 17 mpg highway
(total gas tank) 26 gallons * 13 miles = 338 miles to the tank city / 543.95
km per tank
(total gas tank) 26 gallons * 17 miles = 442 miles to the tank highway / 711
km per tank
26 gallons - 15% = 22.1 gallons * 13 miles = 462km to the tank per city.
You said you get (438km + 38 (DTE)) 478km per tank, so you'd be correct with
the %15 VAPOUR theory.

1996 Sunfire SE Coupe
25 mpg city / 32 mpg highway
(total gas tank) 15.2 gallons * 25 miles = 380 miles to the tank city / 611
km per tank
(total gas tank) 15.2 gallons* 32 miles = 486.4 miles to the tank highway /
782.78 km per tank
I get 678 - 690 per tank with city and highway mixed in. And I drive it
hard, so I would have to get less than what they would post, cause I'm sure
those numbers they post would be inflated with super gentle driving.
57.5 litres is my total tank capacity listed and I always stick in 53 - 55
litres from empty.

So what is it then, is he burning more than he should, is he putting in less
than it can hold, or are they showing what it holds including 15% for
vapour?
I will find this out. Very misleading if they do include VAPOUR!

My 2003 1500 QC has the 26 gal tank though I've never ran it dry I
did get it to take 24.9 gal once, I won't go into the long story of
how that happened.
Tank is 26 gal. Low Fuel warning and light come on at about 1/8 tank
or 12.5% remaining.
I know that when towing my TT I get around 10.5 mpg, when the light
comes on I got about 3.25 gal and 30 miles to find gas.
I know that when not towing (17mpg) I got 3,25 gal and about 50 miles
to find gas.
BTW when traveling distance I carry a five gallon Jerry can of fuel
(so I don't get into the same situation that resulted in the 24.9 gal
fill).
If your friend is fueling as soon as the light comes on he is right
he won't get 26 gal into it.

My 96 gets between 15.5 and 17.4 mpg. It had a 5.2, but the crank broke. I
changed it to a 2001 5.9. I got slightly better economy with the 5.9. In
both cases, the best mileage occurs at 45-50 mph. The worst at 85-90 mph.
The truck has 3.55 gears and a manual 5 speed. It has a 96 liter tank. It
has a speed limiter at 118 mph in the computer.
