I had my 02 Dakota in today for it's 30,000 mile Transmission Service. The
Dealer used ATF+3 in it. The owners manual recommends ATF+4 in the 45RFE
trans. that is in my truck. When I questioned the service writer I was told
that dodge now recommends ATF+3. I have already E-Mailed dodge and will hear
back from then by Wed. My main concern is that my 7yr/100mi. warranty is now
shot. The 7/100 is the only reason a 02 Dodge is in the driveway and not a
02 Chey. Has anyone heard of this change of mind from Dodge???

There is a TSB covering this. It says that ATF+4 must always be used in
vehicles that were originally filled with ATF+4. See

None....Strongly suggest that you get ATF 4 in there ASAP...at the DEALERS
expense.

The dealer is wrong.  It should have ATF+4 in it.  ATF+3 won't hurt it
but your warranty requires the synthetic ATF+4.  There have been TSB's
issued on the subject but your dealer has it backwards.

Maybe, maybe not .......... read the TSB very close and see if your
transmission requires the ATF+4 or +3.

This is the same one Nosey posted and if you read it you will see there
are exceptions.  My truck for example is listed but it came from the
factory with ATF+3 and that is what I still have in it.

Am I reading this TSB wrong?  It says ATF+4 is recommended for all
chryslers EXCEPT those listed above.  Well, above it lists just about
everything!  It even lists my new 2004 Durango that was factory filled
with ATF+4 and whose manuals specifies ATF+4.  My 2001 Ram was also
factory filled with ATF+4 and spec'd as such.
BillyGoat - 24 Oct 2004 04:41 GMT
Yea, you are reading it wrong.  Here is (below) what's listed above.  The
models listed are the ones applicable to the TSB. All TSBs are worded this
way.
bill
NOTE: This bulletin applies to all transmissions manufactured by Chrysler
except for 1999 and earlier minivans with the 41TE/AE transmission, This
Service Bulletin DOES NOT apply to all AW-4 transmissions, Sprinter
transmissions, Crossfire transmissions and WG bodies equipped with a W5J400
or NAG1 transmission (sales code DGJ).

I just looked at T.S.B. 21-004-04 dated March 16, 2004 and in black and
white it clearly stated that all Dakota's 1989-2004 are to be using ATF 4.
This will be a fun one to fix. How is that dealers get Five Stars again.

I will add one more thing. The dealer is
Town & Country Chrysler Dodge Jeep
Bloomington, IN
I will update the results after I talk with the G.M. this week.

Jay it doesn't really say that so as I said before read very carefully
and check out your own vehicle.  What it does say is "It is recommended
that all vehicles with Chrysler automatic transmissions".  Recommended
is the key word here.  If your vehicle came from the factory with ATF+3
then there is no need to change over unless you want to.  Once you make
that change you can't go back.  The list you refer to lists vehicles all
the way back to 1989 and correct me if I'm wrong but ATF+4 wasn't around
then was it.  My truck is a 1999 and came with ATF+3 which is what I
keep in it.  Having said that if your vehicle came with ATF+4 and ATF+3
was put in then you need to get the dealership to correct this right
away because you in fact do need ATF+4.  Make them pull up the TSB and
read it in front of you then see what they say.  If they still insist
the ATF+3 okay then I would find another dealer asap.

Yes my Truck was shipped from Dodge with ATF+4 it's on the dipstick also to
use ATF+4

I am going in on Sat. to get changed back over.

Here is the E-Mail I got back from Dodge.

Dear James,

Thank you for your recent email to DaimlerChrysler Motors regarding your
2002 Dodge Dakota.

When servicing your vehicle's transmission, it is recommended that ATF+4
be used.

Thank you again for your email.

ATF+4 has been around $8 / qt. but now my local dealer Brown Motors in
Petoskey has it for $4.50/qt. & they will ship it in case lots for a max of
$13.12.
Contact erikbrown@brownmotors.com if you want to order a case. (800
762-5220)
They used to give local Hot Rod clubs A PERFORMANCE part discount
near club show times, it would`nt hurt to ask.
(This is a way above average dealership to deal with in my opinion)

ATF+4 has been about $4.75/qt at my dealership.  Gallons are about $18.

A quick way to find out which fluid is required is to look at your dip
stick.  Most all chrysler vehicles state which fluid should be used on the
dip stick its self.
