My 2000 Ram 1500 has the 5.2 V8 FI. Last time I checked I was getting 13 mpg. I have not checked this tank but it is going to be dismal with just over 300 miles and the "get gas" light is on! I am a more conservative driver and expected to get more like 18 to 20 mpg. I am going to add some Sea Foam tomorrow when I fill up but I do not think I should have to do that. This is my first FI engine. It seems to run great, no missing , hesitation or anything like that. Any suggestions on why the mileage is so bad? What can I do? My 4x4 Dak 4.7 is here in England, gets on average around 15mpg here (mostly slow driving, I get closer to 19mpg in the US) and gas is - are you sitting down - almost $7.00 per gallon (converted from pounds per litre)! Those of us who love these trucks prefer not to talk about fuel economy with them because there is no such thing. By the way, in case you're wondering, the little V6 is no better. They are gas guzzlers, period. Please note the period. 13 mpg around town is pretty much normal. Look for 15-16 on the highway with the cruise control set on 55. At Interstate highway speeds of 70-75 you'll probably be back down around 13. Trust me, the truck "likes" 13. And if you think 13 is bad, hang a boat trailer onto the a.s end of it with something small like an 18' runabout or bass boat & 175 hp Merc engine on it. Over flat terrain with no headwind you'll be very lucky to get 9 mpg. Want to really screw up your gas mileage with it? Put something really stupid on it like a camper shell. I had a 2000 ram and got about that for mileage... trading that in for a '04 Hemi, still getting the same (if not slightly better) mileage but have a hell of a lot more HP! The Cummings Diesels are supposed to get up towards 25-28 mpg, but these are meant for towing heavy loads. Not that you cant just buy one for the great mileage, I personally love the look of my Hemi with the Lariame package, 20" dubs. Its so in your face looking compared to Ford or Chevy. My daily commute (26miles) is a mixture of 18 miles of freeway and 8 miles of rural roads. The best I get is an average of around 18-18.5...... but I still like my diesel! Ken B.
