My new truck is getting only about 15 mpg. My dad's 1997 averages 20 mpg
or better. My truck only has about 11,000 miles on it. Is my fuel mileage
average or just too early to tell while the engine breaks in?

Talk to your dealer's service department. There's a new flash available for
these engines to improve the fuel economy. With that said, don't expect
numbers like your father's 12-valve engine... those days are gone,
suppressed by the desire for cleaner emissions (at the cost of more fossil
fuels consumed... brilliant plan)

Tom, that flash is only available for the HO version engine and it may only
increase mileage 1 mpg. Every little bit helps I guess.. <G>

Right... he's got a 2004.5, 325/600 engine.

Something must be wrong. I have an '04 2500 2X4 and from day one, I
got 18-21mpg.
A lot depends on your driving style. If I drove mine hard enough to
get 15mpg I'd be into my third set of tires in less than 20K miles.

I had read some time ago that you will not get your best mpg until after 15K

It depends more on how you work the truck. After the first few hundred
miles, the harder you work it, the faster it will break in. An empty truck,
just driven around town, could take upwards of 30,000mi to fully break in,
whereas a truck that's pulling a heavy trailer behind it could break in in
as little as 10,000mi.

From the cummins.com Dodge Ram FAQ:
How many miles does the Cummins engine require for break-in?
In general, 5000 miles. This depends on the type of driving the truck is
subject to; hauling or towing a load will shorten the break-in period. Light
duty hauling or "babying" the engine can delay full engine break-in for
up-to 20,000 miles.

I have a 2004 HO and mileage at 4K is 18 mpg at 50 mph. At 70 mph it is 15
mpg. At 90 mph it is 12.5 mpg. I have a 3500 dually. It is about as
aerodynamic as an outhouse. Here is the clue, don't drive fast.

I just bought a 2005 Ram 3500 Quad Cab. I think the 4.10:1 gears
might be hurting my highway mialage. My friends older 12 valve ram
only has 3.55:1 gears and most of the 2500 have 3.73:1 gears.
Just doing some checks yesterday, it seems my gas mialage really drops
past 2,000 RPM which is about 65MPH on my truck. At 65 MPH I do get
about 18 MPG, but the engine is not broken in yet, only 500 miles
(Only have had it 3 days!)

Thanks all,
I will have the dealership look at it. But I doubt it will fix anything. I
have spoken to others with almost the same truck and they have better
results. I am going to put the airraid filter on it to see if that may
help after the dealership looks at it.

That sounds about right. I was told at the Cummins factory that the millage
will go up a bit when I get about 50,000 miles on my Dodge. I now get 16.6
and this is with a 4.10 rear end and a 5 speed auto trans. I don't think
16.6 is too shabby! I had a Ford 3/4 ton with the 5.4 gas engine and I never
got more that 17 avg.. The 2004-2005 trucks are a lot heavier that your
Dad's 1997.

I too have a 2004 600 4x4 dually with 6000 miles on it, automatic and
3.73?s. It has never seen 15 mpg, 14?s on the highway empty and 13?s
in town. Dropped into the twelves when towing a single axle trailer
with about 3000# gross on it. Real disappointing, since I traded a
99 Cummins dually that routinely got 18+. I was expecting some less
but not this much. Came here to see what others were experiencing.
Anyone else had experience with a dealer "adjustment" that improved
economy? Has anyone seen significant improvement after the break in
period?
Thanks

Humm, I;ve got a 2005 Dually/Auto/3.73 with 9K on it. I've always got 17.5
and about 12 towing a 12.600 pound 5th wheeler. Maybe you got something
wrong. Bad injector, cloggeg fuel filter, transmission filter dirty????
Might cause some loss. I drive like it's my old Hemi. It's either or stop or
balls to the walls.

I put a K&N air filter system on it and my mileage did get a little
better. I even modified my route to work so I experienced more highway
driving. If I baby it, I get between 16 & 17 on the freeway.

Just remember that K&N’s flow more air by stopping less grit when it
comes to very samll grit. There is no magic here.

I have a 2004.5, 325/600 engine. Ram 2500 4x4 Auto with the 3.73 rear
end
I have never done better than 10 in the city and 14 HWY
I love the truck but hate the mileage
Everyone I’ve taken it to says there’s nothing wrong
I have 30,000 miles and am a vey conservative driver
I towed a friends 7,000 lbs Cobalt Boat to the lake and got 8 MPG
What do I do?
