Does anybody know why my 98 ram 5.9L is hissing when i accelerate? > Does anybody know why my 98 ram 5.9L is hissing when i accelerate? I'll bite. Why? HD Broken vacuum line, loose air intake hose, bad cat. converter, bad muffler, Someone stuck a snake under the seat. Take your pick. Maybe some more info? I have a 2001 5.9 Ram and it does the same thing.I?m not exactly sure what it is but i think it might be the fuel injectors.I was told to make sure i keep them clean on these trucks because they get real dirty.The guy I talked to had a dakota and he never cleaned the fuel system and he had to replace all his injectors. Did you put an aftermarket air-filter "kit" in it? Jeff I put a K&N air filter on it. >I put a K&N air filter on it. That explains it, the sound you are hearing is called the "sandblast effect". It is caused by the tiny particals of dirt the K&N filter allows though, bouncing their way through your system. Hissing gets louder when the engine goes faster, right? Yeah, more air, more dirt. I remember what my Dad's 429 4bbl used to sound like when I'd turn the lid on the air-cleaner over for extra "power". ;-) I suspect any dirt "particles" would make an entirely different sound than a "hiss". I drive a little 3.9 Dakota that makes what I can a whoosing noise when I first start it up and drive away... lasts a good 4-5 minutes Truck (2001) now has 38K on her clock and it has done this from day one.... Have no clue as to what causes this ... and to be honest I have not had it back to the dealer since the day I picked it up.
