Just bought a 2003 4.7L Dodge Ram with 60K miles. It used a quart of oil in
the first 1000 miles I put on it. Should I be concerned? I bought a
Chrysler extended warranty, so I am thinking about taking it in to the
dealer and having them check it out. However, I suspect they will say it
is normal and I will end up wasting my time. Anybody have experience with
high oil consumption on the 4.7L engine?

The 5.2s are famous for sucking in the intake plemnum gasket. I don't
know if the 4.7 has the same problem. It is an easy check though.
With the engine running remove the oil cap and see if you have a
vacumn on the engine. If you do, the gasket is probably bad.

No plenum gasket problem on the 4.7L

I've got an '03 Ram with the 4.7. I'm changing my oil every 3 months,
(which is only at about 1,500 miles), as per the severe duty interval, and
my engine is not using any oil. I only have about 10k on it, though.

That really is just wasting money.

Maybe so, but that plastic wrapped book thingy in the glove box states that
if you have frequent trips under 10 miles, you are in the severe duty
category. Severe duty calls for every 3 months or 3k miles, whichever comes
first. I drive 4 miles to and back from work, not much anywhere else, thus
the low milage on my rig. I would guess that the frequent oil change is
required due to condensation that can occur in the engine if it doesn't get
fully warmed up. I bought my truck because of the 7/70 warranty, and don't
plan on giving DC a reason not to honor it.

Mine has about 65K. It doesn't use any oil between
changes.
