Hello,
I have an 01 Dodge Caravan 3.3L and lately once and awhile driving, the
wipers come on all by themselves
and now i seen them come on from the house while it was sitting in the
driveway parked with no key!    It is very cold out here and wondering if
that might have something to do with it?    Does anyone know what this could
be, its very weird.     Im afraid I will have a drained battery and worn
down wipers in the morning.   :(
Thanks
Mike

The biggest problem was the mulifunction switch on this vehicle. You may
want to take the car in and have the dealer check for any fault codes,
especially in the BCM

Thanks maxpower, but I dont see any fault codes.     What is the BCM anyway,
thanks

IOW, yet another useless part that serves no real purpose other than to make
the vehicle increasingly more complex and all the more difficult to service
outside of the dealership.

I understand that but most of what it does is really unnecessary.   The dome
light, windshield wipers, climate control, head lights, and various other
components seemed to work pretty well on their own prior to the introduction
of the BCM.  The main problem with it is that it tends to put all of the
eggs in one basket and can cost big $$$ to the owner to fix even minor
problems once out of warranty.

If people wouldn't buy it then it wouldn't be built. Folks have to have dome
lights that fade to off  instead of just shutting off. Folks have to have
climate control instead of a cable operated heat lever. How about the speed
sensitive delay wipers?? Don't blame the car manufacturer for this crap,
blame the people that buy it.

And I'm as guilty as the next. I don't think I could survive without the
power sliding doors and tailgate on the T&C.  <G>

I wish I could disable the dome light timer after opening the door of my '99
Ram. I hate the fact that the dome light stays on for a long time (or until
I turn the key to run) after entering the truck. When I get in the truck
after dark at a strange location I get nervous when I can't see out because
of the damn glare caused by the dome light. I think I'd prefer to find the
ignition switch with my key in the dark. I know if I can't, I could crack
the door open to make the dome light come on again.

It was mainly installed to save on wire for production cost

Yup!  We design 'em that way!

So what is done in this situation, does the BCM require replacing??

And where is the BCM located?

The symptoms that you are describing makes that sound like a strong
possibility.  Since your vehicle may still be under warranty, I would have
the dealer take a look at it.  I would suspect that this is not an
inexpensive part.

> And where is the BCM located?

I have no idea where it could be in your vehicle but there are others in
here that may.  Picking up a FSM may be a good idea if you intend to do any
work on that vehicle.  Just looking through it can give you an idea what
jobs may be beyond your abilities before you start them and get yourself
into trouble.

The BCM is located on the left side by the emergency brake assembly, it has
to be ordered thru Chrysler only and programmed before installed, most
likely your problem is going to be in the multifunction switch.. the BCM is
a cost of around 300.00 part only

How would the multi-function switch be to blame for this?  Unless DC made
some changes, I'm unaware of the wipers being active when the ignition
switch is off and his primary concern is that the wipers are activating on
their own with nobody even in the vehicle and the vehicle shut off.  It
looks more like the BCM itself is acting up and turning them on regardless
of input from the ignition or the MFS.

The grease that is used in the switches cause most of the phantom wipe
problems and other related problems, And its not just the Caravans, I had a
repair job today on a 2001 PT Cruiser that could not get the fog lamps off,
even when the key was in his pocket, He pulled the fuse and bought it
in......once again, Mutlifuntion switch cured the problem. Not to say that
the BCM is or is not the problem on the OP post, butt most problems are
related to that switch. when you start multiplexing you save on weight and
wiring, thus keeps the cost down. but problems like these start to creep
up.And thats why we need the BCM.....as someone put it....so the customer
brings it to the dealer
