Rob Dobson - 04 Mar 2005 03:51 GMT I'm looking at purchasing a used 2002 Dakota but have a question about the models. I've found a 4DR SLT 4x4 with 70,000kms for $24,995.00 Canadian. It has the 4.7L V8. I also found a Sport 4DR with 67,000kms for $22,995.00 Canadian. It has the 3.9L V6 wich would be better on gas I would think. Which was the better model the SLT or the Sport?

You only get 1mpg more than the V8, and you give up a lot of area under the power curve. Sport vs SLT is purely up to you. It's just a trim and options package, so it's whatever looks good to you and has what you want.

I am retired, but need a truck ... did not need anything powerful do not carry heavy loads ets so I went for the V6 and a 5 speed trany What a mistake... ! The darn thing is just geared completely worng and there is no POWER.....period...!
My Dakota is a nice" little old mans truck".... and I am just a SOB...not nice at all....

I looked at that same mpg, decided on power over one lousy MPG, and after reading this, am really glad I did. That 4.7 V8 (stick) really gets up and goes if I ask it to. Hubby complains of whiplash :)
(can I cue a 'Tool Man Taylor' "HuHuHu" if I'm a gal?)
Incidentally, I have the SLT package. If I remember correctly, on the 2001 it has a bit more 'stuff' than the Sport, or at least more 'stuff' that I wanted...

Rob Dobson - 05 Mar 2005 02:04 GMT I have since found cheaper prices. I was just using these two for comparision because they happen to be at the same dealer. My big question was V6 or V8.

I Think you have gotten you answer....
My 2001 V6 gets an honest 19 to 20 mpg... always has.... Biga Fricken Deal since it will not get its own way...no power....(at least in the Rpm ranges I find myself Needing...NOT Wanting...some power)

The 4.7L V8 is definitely more powerful, but it's also aluminum, so ten years down the road when the heads are all cracked and leaky, Chrysler will refuse to make any replacement parts for you, while the cast iron V6's keep on chugging. No I don't have a crystal ball, that's just a projection based on Chrysler's past behavior.

However, my 2002 4.7L Dakota is a lemon. It has cost me more money and time in repairs, in 50,000 miles, than my 1994 did in 150,000 miles.
I recommend you look for some other vehicle.

JohnC - 06 Mar 2005 21:15 GMT Rob Dobson, et al: My 2002, 3.9, Dakota w/ 2 wd, auto tran, has gotten over 20 mpg highway, but is under powered. The down shifting on hills is maddening. JohnC

Have to drive like I have an egg under my foot, but it will do it. Can drive it like I want to and get 18.5 mpg.
