I'm leaving CA for Alaska for a few weeks of travel with my '04 Arctic Fox
5th wheel behind my '03 2500 Laramie HO 4WD. I already have 60k on the
original tires and want to change them out before I leave. I was in talking
to Big-O today, as that is where I have bought for the past 15-20 years or
so, and he is recommending the Big Foot A/T. He says it handles wet roads
much better than the Mich. I have on there (yeah, not much traction on the
originals). Also rated for 70k miles.
He did say there might be a bit more road noise, but not much. These are
LT265/70R17. More tire info at
http://www.bigotires.com/index.asp?PG=2&Sub=12b&CatID=01BIG31 or
http://tinyurl.com/5rmh4 for short. For 4 tires, he will toss in the
alignment.
This is a tire I expect to last 24 - 30 months, so I want to have something
that won't be bothersome. Is this a good tire? Are there better ones out
there in the $7-800 price range? The only complaint I really have about the
michilins (sp) is the lack of traction on wet pavement.

I don't know about those but I put a set of BFG Revos on my ole Dodge about
a month ago and am fairly impressed. I've had to go out and plow twice with
them in this slushy wet snow and the traction has been very good. My size is
285/75R16 and they were $160 ea.

A couple of day's ago we picked up 6". More supposedly Wed -Fri.
Put the strobes in yesterday. No matter how many times I do this it is a big
friggin PIA. The 05's don't leave much room to drill a hole in the back up
light. I need 1" hole and barely made it. Six lights, all had to be
waterproofed, then wires snaked back along the frame rails to under the
drivers side seat. Even with ps there was more room to mount the power
supply than under the passenger. Anyway got it all finished, turned them all
on and found I could not run the fronts and rears together. On two switches
and one would cancel out the other. We went over the wiring for a couple of
hours to no avail. Figure it is the power supply. I'll mess with it next
weekend. I don't often run the fronts due to the reflection off the snow, so
the rears will be fine.

I put BFG All Terrain Tires on my last 2500 hemified. Good traction in rain,
snow, and mud. Lower road noise than most. Mine cost a little more than you
noted above, but I did put on 285R X 17. The tire is so much wider than the
Michelins that my MPG dropped about 1.5 MPG, but I doubt that'll make too
much difference with a Diesel. I got em Discount Tires (best price in
Dallas) with a lifetime rotation and balance, for about 1050.00.
Here's the tire:

Good luck on your Alaska trip, it is marvelous country. When you are
in Whitehorse, Yukon take the time and drive down to Skagway, Alaska,
it is one of the worlds most scenic drives and is only a hundred
miles. An easy one day trip unless you want to overnight in Skagway,
there are two nice RV-parks.

Thanks, Hank. We will add that side trip to the list of possibilities. We
have only 6 weeks, but it seems that Skagway might be well worth the time.
How is the fishing there in mid to late May?

Not a bad tire. I would make sure you have at least a pair of spares for
the vehicle and two for the trailer. Depending on where you go in Alaska
the roads can be VERY brutal on tires. Also not a bad idea to buy a set
of clear headlight covers and maybe a bra for the nose of the truck,
gravel really does a number on the paint. I have been up there twice
once in an RV and once by motorcycle. Had a great time both times even
with a few problems.

Watch out for the load range when towing. I've been eyeing the BFG Long
Trail TA for my 2500. Comments on these would be appreciated from the group.
The roads from Seward up to Denali National Park are very good. I can't say
about any others, I flew into Anchorage and drove N/S from there.

Last time we drove up with the fifth-wheel was in 2003, the Alaska
Highway was all payved exept for construction zones. Mind you some
were as long as 15 miles. The higway will never be finished, there
will always be construction due to the harsh climate. We never had a
flat on either the Dodge or the trailer. Now, if you want to drive the
Dempster up to Inuvik, that becomes another story. It is all gravel
and north of Eagle Plains the gravel is shale, sharp as a knife. There
it is not a question of whether you will have a flat or not, it is
when you will have one. Again, Have a good trip.
